Guest guest
First Notice: June 21, 2006 JAPAN DOLPHIN DAY Protest the Japanese Dolphin Slaughter Dear friends and colleagues: As most of you know, the world's largest slaughter of dolphins and porpoises takes place in Japan every single year. Why don't we get ourselves organized and protest the inhumane massacres before the killing season starts this year? Last year, we protested on the weekend when more protesters were available. This year, however, several NGOs have suggested we carry out the demo during working hours while the Japanese embassy and consulate offices are occupied. Excellent idea, let's do it on Wednesday, September 20th, 2006. If we show up in huge numbers, we will be heard loud and clear in Tokyo. The goal is to make this the BIGGEST global protest against the annual dolphin slaughter in history -- bigger and louder than last year. At this year's IWC meeting, Japan opposed the conservation of small cetaceans. They opened the 58th IWC meeting with a resolution to prevent the IWC from discussing the conservation of small cetaceans. Fortunately, they failed in this effort. Each individual animal of the about 20,000 dolphins and porpoises that are killed in Japan every year is just as important as any of the great whales - no more, no less. With this in mind, we are hoping that everyone who is opposed to the annual dolphin slaughter will show up and demonstrate at a Japanese embassy or consulate office. Please note that this will be an all-inclusive event. In other words, the protest will not take place under the umbrella of any one group. The event will be carried out by all of us, on a equal basis. Each group represents itself and will contact the media in their city with their own press release. All participating groups can be listed in the press release in alphabetical order. Our Japanese colleagues tell us that outside pressure can stop the annual dolphin slaughter. So why not give the Japanese decision-makers some serious international media pressure? We have to get organized early, so here is what we need to know: How many groups are willing to participate in organizing this event? We need as many organizations and individuals as possible to show up in front of the Japanese embassies and consulate offices around the world. As a first step, we are trying to identify what kind of cooperation we can get from the international animal welfare community. Please contact me if your group is interested in participating in Japan Dolphin Day on September 20th, 2006. I'll start putting the list together and network it around.
