City officers shot the dogs on Thursday at the home of Eng Her Sun, who owned 26 of the animals, after neighbours had complained about the noise and smell. Some also reportedly said they feared they could be attacked. " My house became a killing field. There was blood everywhere, " Eng was quoted as saying by the *New Straits Times*. " This is so inhumane. The dogs were like my children. " Local officials defended their actions, saying Eng was uncooperative and the dogs had attacked the officers sent to the house, but animal welfare groups condemned what they said was a brutal killing. *'Cruel and unncecessary act'* The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals called the shooting a " cruel and unnecessary act " . " The government has a duty to ensure that officers in the field of animal population control are licensed, properly trained, and adept at using safe and effective animal control equipment, " it said in a statement. Sherrina Krishnan, from animal welfare group Independent Pet Rescuers, said: " If this had happened to cats, all of Malaysia would have been up in arms. " " Because they are dogs, only a certain percentage of people are prepared to react to this, " Krishnan told *AFP*. A number of ethnic majority Malay Muslims consider dogs to be unclean.
