Guest guest
Tuesday July 4, 2006 - The Star Owner moves out to be with dogs *By BEH YUEN HUI* newsdesk *SEREMBAN:* For the sake of his dogs, Eng Her Sun is prepared to give up his home in Taman Desa Rasah here where he has lived for more than 10 years. In the face of endless complaints from neighbours about his pets, the 66-year-old former bank clerk is thinking of moving to a secluded spot in Membau, where he now rents a hut to house some of his dogs. " There, I can live peacefully with my sister and 'children'. " My present house will be put up for sale to fund my new home, " he said. Eng claimed the owner had agreed to lease him the plot in Membau, about the size of a basketball court. " I will put up a proper fence and keep my pets within the compound at the new place, " he said. On Thursday, 13 of his dogs were shot dead by a Seremban Municipal Council team acting on a court order following many complaints from his neighbours over the years. He now has 13 dogs left, with just two of which are in his single-storey terrace house. --\ --------- Letters to editor Tuesday July 4, 2006 - The Star Wrong of council men to shoot dogs in the house I REFER to your report, " Owner of 25 dogs tries to save pets from death<http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2006/6/30/nation/14700989 & sec=n\ ation> " (*The Star,* June 30). As a dog lover, I find it heart-wrenching to read that 13 of the 25 dogs were shot dead in the owner's own house by the Seremban Municipal Council. This is outrageous! How could the council do such a thing? It is undeniable that the owner went overboard by having too many dogs but is it necessary to shoot the dogs in his house? What if the dog shooters misfired? Did they not even stop to consider the fact that they were in a housing area? They should have rounded up the dogs and taken them away instead. Some of the dogs might still have a chance to be adopted. Otherwise, they could be put to sleep. This would have been a more humane way to dispose of them. They might just be dogs but they have every right to live as well. I hope that the council officers will not repeat what they did because it does not speak well of the council. Nothing can justify what they did to those dogs. It was definitely a wrong move on their part. *CONCERNED DOG OWNER, Kuala Lumpur.* --\ ------- Shooting should be done with care - The Star RECENTLY, an Ipoh Municipal Council dog shooter and his team visited our housing area in Puncak Jelapang Maju and started shooting dogs randomly. It happened at 10am. I agree dogs can be a nuisance sometimes, and many of the owners are irresponsible. But the way the shooting was carried out really bothered me. The shooter fired at any dog in sight without seemingly bothering to stop and check if anyone was around him. My father happened to be outside our house just few metres away when our neighbour's dog was shot. I was worried sick as I have three young children, one of them still a toddler. *MURALI SUBRAMANIAM, Ipoh.*
