1. FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN. SECRETARY:

WE SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THOSE WHO CAN’T!

PAWS is an active organizations with a core team of forty dedicated

young volunteers, four employees, five Honorary Animal Welfare Officers,

three running ambulances and two independent Trusts in Mumbai & Thane

Districts. Along with this, we also attend to about a hundred and twenty

calls per month on animal related issues. To run this entire structure

we require huge amounts of money. When our finances dipped dangerously

low this month we even contemplated halting the ambulance services

temporarily.

Our Monthly Newsletters, E-mails, Press releases & quarterly printed

newsletters keep you abreast of all our work. Our aim is not only to

raise funds but also to create awareness about treatment of animals in

general. For all this we need a continuous flow of money and can not

function without your donations.

Support PAWS & make a difference to life!

Yours for Animals,

Nilesh Bhanage

PAWS & ASHA PROJECT

PAWS – Plant & Animals Welfare Society

ASHA – Association for Service & Healing of Animals

THANE SPCA – Thane Society for prevention of cruelty to animals

This was a unique new venture with our newly found sister concern ASHA,

an Andheri based NGO for animal welfare supported us in our Project of

vaccination and health check up of donkeys at Pandharpur.

On 5th JUNE 2006 (DAY 1) the PAWS team left Thane at 7.00pm in the new

Ambulance (funded by Animal Welfare Board) with first aid medicines, life

saving drugs & saline and rescue equipments.

On 6th JUNE 2006 (DAY 2) PAWS volunteers Shiv-Prasad Phadke, Vishal

kantharia, Kishor Savle & Kunal Chheda formally introduced the two NGOs

idea to help the suffering animals there. In the afternoon the team

renderd first aid to about thirty injured and maggot infested donkeys.

ON the 7th JUNE 2006 (DAY 3), the PAWS team ordered tetanus vaccines

for the donkey camp and rescued two female donkeys. One of them lovingly

named Monali, had a heavily wounded front right leg with maggot wounds.

She was pregnant and lying injured and unattended near the Bus Stand

unattended when the PAWS team decided to rescue it and took in intheir

ambulance to the local surgeon Dr. Bele’s clinic where Monali inderwent

a surgery. She was later shifted to Shiv-Prasad’s Bungalow for post

operative care.

Another female donkey was brought to the clinic and operated By Dr. Bele

medication & vaccination. Over 100 donkeys were vaccinated by PAWS team

within four hours.

4. COW CASE:

When PAWS Animal ambulance got a call from kalyan to save a 400 pound

cow that was suffering from maggot wounds in its face and eyes, it swung

into action. On the way to Bombay SPCA after crossing the Bhiwandi

by-pass on eastern expressway,a lady pedestrian got a slight shove in an

overcrowded are and sustained a very minor injury. The team took her to

municipal hospital act tough not allowing the cow ambulance with the

bleeding cow to proceed further. After endless hours of waiting the

ambulance was released only after a call came from Mrs Maneka Gandhi. Paws

driver kishore had to undergo a lot of trouble till Mrs Gandhi could help

out. The cow however did not survive and all this left us with a bitter

taste. We would like to see the Police Department being more considerate

towards animal workers, cooperating and helping us than making it

difficult. Their attitude should reduce the sufferings of the animals

rather than increase them.

But Not so!

The young team of PAWS including Shiv-Prasad Phadke, Kisor Savle &

Richard Masaramenahas did a regular check on illegally sold birds at

Kalyan market and did a wonderful job by rescuing them with the help

of forest oficers in te area.

Poacher caught for selling endangered lizard’s oil

The four young animal activists took ‘medicine man’ Shama Singh to the

Thane forest officials, but were refused help since it was a Saturday;

they later turned to the Kalwa police for help

Bapu Deedwania

Three youngsters and an Animal Welfare Officer (AWO) caught an animal

poacher selling oil extracted from Monitor lizards at Kalwa railway

station, near Thane on Saturday. The reptile is protected under the Wild

Life Protection Act, and products made using its body parts are illegal.

Friends of animal activists Kishore Sawade (21), Richard Mascarenas (22)

and John Ballivan (20) told the trio about Shama Singh who would carry

out his trade out side the station.

The three volunteer for an NGO called the Plant and Animal Welfare

Society (PAWS).

“We contacted Anuradha Ramaswamy, who is an AWO to guide us,” said Sawade.

The team reached the spot on Saturday afternoon. “We had no problems in

locating him — he was sitting with around fifty dead monitor lizards on

display on a sheet in front of him. He was also using a live lizard to

attract attention of the people,” said Ramaswamy.

“After people gathered to watch him, Singh would hold up a bottle of

‘Sanda ka tel (Sanda’s oil)’ and extol its virtues,” said Mascarenas.

“We were surprised to see that the live lizard did not run away. When we

asked him how that was so, he told us that he had broken its spine using

his thumb,” adds Ballivan.

The group first took Singh — along with his container of dead lizards, the

oil extracted from them and the live one — to the Wild Life department in

Thane. They were told that it being a Saturday, nothing could be done.

Disappointed, the group headed to Kalwa Police Station. “We knew we could

not keep the live lizard with us, and it was important to get Singh

arrested. P J Thakur, a senior inspector at the station assisted us and

Singh was booked under sections 9, 39, 40 of the Wild Life Protection Act,

1972,” said Ramaswamy.

* HOW THE OIL IS EXTRACTED

Singh purchased live monitor lizards from the Kutch boarder and broke

their spinal cords so that they could not escape. He then immersed them in

boiling water, while they were still alive. The film of oil that rose to

the surface of the water was collected into small vials, and sold for Rs

50 each.
