Guest guest
Tuesday July 11, 2006-The Star Over-harvesting of sea must stop I REFER to your report, " Fish now sold via the Net " and the picture of a fish supplier holding up juvenile Scalloped Hammer Head Sharks. I am concerned as to the practice of commercial shark harvesting which is evident from the photograph. If I am not mistaken, sharks can only be taken as a by-catch. Moreover, juvenile sharks (and pups) like all immature fish cannot be harvested so as to preserve the stocks. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in marine eco systems and taking them out in such numbers could disrupt the ecological balance. Given that the reproductive capacity of sharks are slower than other common commercially harvested marine fishes, such practices should be curbed to reduce the ecological impact. Sharks should not be a consumable product nor used in the aquaria trade. I strongly urge the Fisheries Department to look into this matter. On the same note, the department should ensure that fish sold via the Internet comprise un-threatened species. If we want to preserve the fisheries industry in the country we must be mindful of the ecological factors. Over-harvesting of any species and the practice of taking immature fish should hence be stopped. *THE DUGONG DUDE, Kuala Lumpur.*
