Guest guest
Rochelle, more on dogs: - New Straits Times *Cross-country:* Society comes to rescue of animals *20 Jul 2006* <news ------------------------------ *PETALING JAYA: The 45 dogs and 20 cats at the animal pound had been doomed to die tomorrow unless some kind souls adopted them. * It did not look promising initially but just like in a Disney movie, a happy ending is finally in sight. The Ti-Ratana Welfare Society has stepped forward to offer temporary shelter for the dogs and cats which are not adopted by tomorrow. Volunteer Wellington Ho said that between 2pm and 4pm tomorrow, all remaining dogs and cats will be moved from the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) animal pound in Puchong Perdana and placed at a temporary shelter in Desa Petaling. The public can adopt them from the temporary shelter. " We hope at least 60 per cent of the animals will be adopted. We don't want their lives to be taken away. Putting them down should be the last resort, " he said. Ho said the dogs and cats would be kept in a makeshift pound at a plot of land owned by the Buddhist society when they get the go-ahead from the MPSJ. " It is not the best of conditions, but it should be enough as a halfway house for the dogs and cats. If we still have a few animals remaining after that, we will have to decide where to keep them next. " This is the second reprieve for the animals which had originally been due to be put down by the MPSJ on July 16. A distress call from a man, who wished to remain anonymous, saved their lives. Subang Jaya State Assemblyman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng, who is also MPSJ councillor, helped to extend the grace period to give more time to rescuers to put the animals, many of which were young and healthy, up for adoption. In the adoption drive organised by the Independent Pet Rescuers Malaysia between 9am and 4pm yesterday, 11 dogs were adopted and three more were sent to a veterinarian for treatment. Pet rescuer Sherrina Krishnan said 80 per cent of the animals were healthy and suitable for adoption. Housewife Jackie Lai and husband Lai Kwong Onn, both 51, from Bandar Kinrara, Puchong, were among those who visited the animal pound yesterday after learning about the fate of the animals. The couple adopted a puppy. The pet rescuers and the Ti-Ratana Welfare Society are looking for volunteers to help move the animals to Desa Petaling tomorrow. Those with a van or car should meet at No 1, Jalan Utama, Taman Perindustrian Puchong Perdana (next to the Mariamman Hindu temple) at 2pm.
