This is the second time Titan Chemicals, which is Southeast Asia's largest polyolefins producer with two operating sites in Johor, has come forward to fund the Titan-UNDP Dugong Conservation Project. Last year, it gave a RM114,000 grant for the project, now in its second phase. Under this phase, the scientists hope to understand the mammal's behaviour, travel pattern and usage of their habitats. It also includes a detailed study on seagrass areas around Johor. The scientists had focused on locating and assessing the dugong population and habitat distribution under the first phase. " The team will tag the mammals with a transmitter and use satellites to track them so we can learn about their movements over a period of time, " Titan Chemicals managing director Thomas P. Grehl said at the cheque presentation ceremony. Project team leader Associate Professor Dr Azhar Hussin said the research would help find ways to protect the dugong. The research team is also looking for experienced divers who would like to volunteer their services. They can contact Dr Azhar at azharhh. The local community will also help to monitor the seagrass in a programme called " seagrass watch " .
