dog killings in China - historical perspective?

I have been following the reports like everyone else in China (including now a

potential 500,000 more dog killings to come) but aside from hand wringing;

responding to the new petitions and appeals that the various good groups are now

putting out was wondering why this is an explosive issue now. China without

any effective ABC program or for that matter any vets doing spay/neuter have

been killing for years. And while dogs as pets are tolerated and then not

tolerated according to the whims of policy makers there have been so many

similar round ups before. In areas of Tibet where stray dogs were

affectionately fed by monks the Chinese authorities have been killing them also

for many years. Perhaps the main stream press has just not been picking up

these killings before? Or is it such big press now because of the higher

numbers and extreme brutality. Maybe the Chinese feel that since they have

been doing like this what is the big deal now? Of course, we can all tell them

and protest! And do hope that something positive can work itself out for the

all the animals of China from this horrendous event.

I particularly feel for the new Chinese animal welfare groups and wish them all

the greatest success.

kind regards, Weintraub, Seattle, WA USA
