Dear Jia Meng,

We have all been following, with great distress, the reports of the

horrendous mass killing of dogs in China with reports of more to come.

I am attaching a paper on the success of the animal birth control -

anti-rabies

(ABC-AR) programme in Chennai, India.

It gives concrete evidence of how an ABC/AR programme works in reducing

rabies

and the number of street dogs.

If the purpose of mass killing of dogs in Chennai was to control the street

dog

population and, through this, the incidence of rabies, the killing programme

failed

spectacularly on both counts. Each year, since 1860, the Corporation of

Chennai

(formerly Madras) kept killing more and more animals - yet the number of

dogs and

the incidence of rabies kept going up steadily. The 130 year old practice of

dog killing was replaced in 1996 at which time as many as 135 dogs were most

cruelly

electrocuted each day in Chennai city alone. After the killing stopped

completely -

no dog has been killed by the Chennai Corporation for almost 10 years - the

number

of rabies cases has come down from 120 in 1996 to five in each of the last

two years.

India's national policy is now total no-kill (except for seriously sick and

injured animals)

and all local bodies are required to implement only ABC-AR.

Since India has the highest incidence of rabies in the world and a

population of over

one billion people, China could learn from it without making the same stupid

mistake of

going in for the knee-jerk reaction of killing each time there is an

outbreak of rabies.

Innocent's massacre in China

Hi, dear friends

We are animal lovers from Greece. Having heard of this horrible,

appaling event we would like to express our support to any effort that

fights such practices. Moreover we would like to make known, that a lot

of people here strongly condemn China's policy towards animals. While

other Asian countries (like India) are taking big steps forward

concerning animal protection and others are trying to do so, China fails

to keep up with them on the threshold of 2008 Olympic Games. Such

barbaric practices are no solutions to the problem of stray animals and

relativ epidemics. History itself proves so.

With warmest regards,

Maria and Katerina Nika,

Greece
