Guest guest
>China fails to keep up...on the threshold of 2008 Olympic Games. ANIMAL PEOPLE has pointed out ever since China was awarded the 2008 Olympic Games that this occasion offers an unprecedented opportunity for animal advocates to make constructive and useful contact with Chinese counterparts, to strengthen the influence of the very rapidly growing Chinese animal advocacy community. However, it is very important to understand that the Olympic Games are to be held in Beijing, which is almost as far removed from the region where dogs and cats are eaten, skinned, and killed en masse in rabies panics as Athens is from Timbuctoo. The Beijing region is historically Mandarin-speaking, and the Mandarin culture traditionally does not eat dogs and cats. The Guangdong region is historically Cantonese-speaking, and for much of Chinese history was for all practical purposes a separate nation, even when nominally under common rule. A common saying there is that " The mountains are high, and the emperor is far away, " referring to the relatively high degree of autonomy that administrators of the provinces farthest from Beijing have always had. -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O.
