Guest guest
Answer to Joan Barrett's letter Legal action over dog massacre - Malaysiakini.com online website Dr Jon S Satyamoorthy Aug 11, 06 3:10pm <javascript:chgFontSize(0)> <javascript:chgFontSize(1)> <javascript:chgFontSize(2)> We would like to make a clarification to your reader in New Zealand, Joan Barrett, who wrote the letter *Dog slaughter a brutal act<http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/54898> * regarding Eng Her Sun whose 13 dogs in Seremban were shot dead by the local council recently. Eng was not an animal hoarder as assumed by Barrett. (Animal hoarding or collecting is a situation when a pet owner goes overboard and possesses more than he or she can actually care for. In such cases, the animal suffers abuse by not being cared for properly or fed and the authorities have to come in and rescue the animals from the owner. The owner himself usually does not realise that the pets are really being abused by him. Such persons are in need of psychiatric intervention.) When Marpo met up with Eng and his elderly sister, we pleasantly discovered that his dogs were in the best of health and had made regular trips to the local vet which were verified by the latter. All his dogs were neutered. According to Eng, he had tried to relocate his dogs many times but failed to get support from others. This has also been independently confirmed. Marpo believes that the local council should have offered more support to help Eng relocate his dogs instead of killing them. After all, though misguided, Eng did do a kind deed for the local neighbourhood and the council by taking the animals off the streets where they would have been more of a nuisance to more people. Marpo has joined forces with other animal NGOs to form the Coalition Against Dog-Shooting and All Inhumane Methods (Casim) to help Eng and others like him who have become victims of an uncaring society. Casim is initiating legal action against those responsible for the massacre. *The writer is the protem president for the Malaysian Association for Responsible Pet Ownership (Marpo).*
