Guest guest
- " Nigel Otter " <ipannilgiris Does the ABC programme really work to control rabies in the long run? We have seen some success in the Nilgiris. Our own experience of ABC on a large scale is in a small area [about 50 square kms] surrounding Mavanhalla, Masinagudi, Mudumalai and up to the foothills of the Nilgiris on the Mysore side. Circumstances, ie availability of voulunteer vets who were not able to operate in the towns and also panchayats who were helpful and willing to subsidise the shelter with grain and fodder in time of need made us choose to concentrate on the area nearest to the IPAN shelter. There are not many dogs here and most are " community " dogs so it has been easier to keep track. We estimate that about 80% of all stray dogs have been sterilised and vaccinated against rabies. That is about 4000 dogs. We have had no incidence of rabies in the past 5 years. Neighouring Gudulur and Pandulur has had two outbreaks in the same time. There has been a definite decrease in stray dogs over the past 4 to 5 years. Quality of life and good health in all strays is visible. > > Over the towns of Ooty, Coonoor, Wellington etc in the Hills the ABC > programme has been patchy and depends on the whim of the Municipality. > Here there have been small reports of rabid dogs who have been killed by > locals making it difficult for us to investigate. > Fay Vohra IPAN www.indiapan.org
