Group seeks ban of dog meat in restaurants

By Jane Cadalig

BENT on putting a stop to dog meat eating, a

foreign-funded institution is moving for the amendment

of the Animal Welfare Law to prohibit the serving of

dog meat in food establishments.

The Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) Inc., an

organization working for the promotion of animal

welfare in the Philippines, is determined to work with

the government to ban the inclusion of dog meat as one

of the menus offered in restaurants.

AKF managing head Suzanne Llanera, in a recent seminar

in La Trinidad, Benguet, disclosed the group's plan of

asking Congress to amend Republic Act (RA) 8485 or the

Animal Welfare Act of 1998 to prohibit dog meat in

food establishments.

The law bans the killing of dogs except those that are

used in religious or ritual purposes.

Several provinces however are engaged in the

commercialization of dogs and the eventual serving of

their meat in restaurants.

Representatives from the AKFI, National Meat

Inspection Service and other concerned agencies

conducted a seminar among law enforcement agencies and

government offices to raise the level of public

awareness on the law.

Animal rights advocates and government authorities

claimed that dog is not considered a food animal.

Llanera said the public is slowly gaining awareness

that dog meat eating is prohibited under the law, but

the help of the local government units (LGUs) is still

needed in its full implementation.
