UK task force studies measures against food fraud

By Ahmed ElAmin

10/04/2006 - The UK has set up a fraud task force to study how to beef up

measures against the trade in illegal food.

At its meeting on 6 April, the Food Standards Agency board agreed to set up

the new body to consider further regulatory action to help tackle the trade,

part of a increased attention toward the issue within the EU.

Such trade cuts into the sales of legitimate food producers by placing

cheaper products on the market. Adulterated butter, buffalo meat declared as

beef, tigernuts imported as flower bulbs are some of the products that have

been stopped at the EU's borders. In the UK the FSA is currently

investigating allegations of illegally imported meat from China through Euro

Freeze, in Northern Ireland...

Meat to be destroyed as part of illicit labeling investigation

23/08/2006 - Yesterday a court ruled to condemn meat from a Northern Ireland

coldstore as part of continuing investigation by the UK food standards

agency into illegal health labeling.

The court ordered 254 pallets of meat that was intended for human

consumption to be destroyed at the expense of Northern Ireland's Euro

Freeze. The company may soon be facing criminal proceedings into a scandal

that involved illicit repackaging, re-labelling and distribution of meat.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) launched the investigation in November of

last year after closing down Euro Freeze in Northern Ireland. The closure

sparked an EU-wide hunt for products that used ingredients originating from

the coldstore.

The closure was ordered after the Department of Agriculture and Rural

Development seized a shipment of poultry from China that was destined for

Euro Freeze. This shipment was destroyed due to violations of animal health

standards...
