Guest guest
Thursday August 31, 2006-The Star Plan for maximum 250 visitors a day to Pulau Payar marine park ALOR STAR: All visitors to Pulau Payar will soon have to register with a special agency before being allowed to set foot on the gazetted marine park. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the state had proposed to the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry that such an agency be set up to restrict the number of visitors to the park. " We want to allow a maximum of 250 tourists to the island daily, and they should only be allowed to enter via Langkawi, " he told newsmen after chairing the state executive council meeting yesterday. Mahdzir said up to 700 people visit the marine park daily through departure points in Langkawi, Kuala Kedah and Penang. He said so far all the tour operators in Kedah and Penang have agreed to the plan, aimed at protecting the corals. On another matter, Mahdzir said the state government had extended the discount levy of between 20% and 50% on each land title until end of this year.
