TIRUPATI: A female spotted deer was knocked down by a jeep on the Tirumala first ghat road. None of the departments concerned -- TTD's forest wing, Vigilance and Security, and of course the police -- responded to the SoS reportedly sent to them by the passers-by to save the life of the deer, which according to eye-witness accounts, looked pregnant as well. " The staff who answered the phone calls said they are coming, but none turned up at least for the next two hours. We waited there chanting verses from scriptures for its survival, " said a Good Samaritan who frantically tried to get urgent medical attention to the gasping deer. Efforts to secure the help of EMRI's '108 emergency' service also turned futile as the operators reportedly expressed helplessness saying they were trained only in handling exigencies involving humans. " We later came to know that some forest guards arrived at the scene much later and took away the deer, but we do not know about her fate, " he said. © Copyright 2000 - 2006 The Hindu
