Guest guest
Thursday September 7, 2006-The Star Penang willing to list turtle sites *P*ENANG has no qualms about gazetting a portion of the Penang National Park, the world's smallest, as a turtle sanctuary. State Tourism Development and Environment Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said he was under the impression that such a move was unnecessary since the whole area had already been gazetted as a national park. He said the 2,562ha park was gazetted as a national park in 2003, which meant that the flora and fauna in the area were pro- tected. " But, if the Auditor-General feels otherwise, we will do the needful provided it is not in conflict with existing laws. " We will first seek the opinion of the Rantau Abang-based Turtle and Marine Ecosytem Centre (Tumec), " he told newsmen yesterday. Teng was commenting on the Auditor-General's Report for 2005 that Penang had not gazetted its turtle landing spots. Others states named were Te-rengganu, Malacca, Pahang and Perak. Teng said he would meet Tumec officials next week to discuss the promotion of the turtle sanctuary for tourism. It had been reported that the green and Olive Ridley turtles nest in Pantai Kerachut and Te- luk Kampir – both these areas are located within the park.
