Injured sheep adds colour to protest

*KUALA LUMPUR:* A sorry-looking sheep with one leg bandaged created quite a

stir in front of the Australian High Commission building in Jalan Yap Kwan

Seng yesterday.

Leaning on a crutch and holding a placard that read *Stop Sheep Abuse!

Boycott Australian Wool, *it caused many motorists to do a double take.

TRAFFIC STOPPER: The sheep holding up a placard protesting against sheep

abuse in front of the Australian High Commission building in Kuala Lumpur

yesterday.

The creature was actually a representative of People for the Ethical

Treatment of Animals (Peta) Asia-Pacific participating in the animal rights

group's protest against the mutilation and live export of sheep from

Australia.

" Thousands of sheep die each year because of people's ignorance about the

cruelty that these animals endure, " said Peta activist Ashley Fruno.

She cited the example of the actual procedures used by Australian sheep

farmers to cure flystrike, an infestation of fly maggots on a sheep's body.

" Without using any painkillers, the farmers cut huge chunks of skin and

flesh from the sheep's rump, " she said.

Most of those in the crowd that had gathered around the " sheep " found the

protest an eye-opener.

" I really didn't know that this is the scenario in the sheep industry. I

hope that the situation will change in the future, " said sales executive

Noridah Manan, 24.

Animal lover Gayathri Nair, 23, said this was the first time she had

witnessed such a protest, adding that many Malaysians were not familiar with

current animal-related issues.
