Guest guest
Thursday September 7, 2006 - The Star Elusive rhino captured on video *KOTA KINABALU:* The wild Sumatran Rhino, not seen in the last 10 years, has been captured on video. Experts believe this indicates that the species is " fighting back " to co-exist in Sabah's rainforest. " It is the first time a picture of the Sumatran Rhinoceros has been taken in its natural habitat, " Dr M.S. Thaya, SOS Rhino Borneo programme officer, told a media presentation. He said the sighting of the male rhinoceros, lasting several seconds on the video last week, was the most exciting news since the discovery of baby rhino tracks in the heart of Borneo. The discovery happened during a routine patrol by SOS Rhino, a non-profit organisation, in a Sabah forest. Dr Thaya said they had never sighted a wild rhino in the jungle in the last 10 years although they had found tracks of the elusive and shy animal. He said researchers would now be able to shed more light on the Sumatran Rhino, the smallest of the five species of rhinos left in the world.
