Malaysian villagers have called on a medicine man known for his ability to

communicate with reptiles to help find a crocodile thought to have killed a

12-year-old boy, reports said today.

Cheek Inu, 70, who is a " bomoh " or medicine man, has been summoned to a

village in Sarawak where a crocodile is believed Sunday to have made off

with the boy who was swimming in a river.

The *New Straits Times* said Cheek Inu had already been " in communication "

with the crocodile but had requested more time to " persuade " the killer to

surrender.

Hundreds of police, rescue workers and volunteers have been searching for

the boy with no result, and the newspaper said Cheek's arrival Tuesday had

buoyed the operation.

*Forced croc to 'surrender'*

Cheek reportedly persuaded another crocodile in 2000 to " surrender " after

killing a young girl and officials said he could do it again.

" You cannot simply discount his ability because he has proven himself

before. We hope he can do it again, " an unnamed policeman told the

newspaper.

The village chief, Saili Othman, said Cheek had already visited the spot

where the boy was snatched and had " thrashed " around on the muddy river

bank.

He also set seven traps with monkeys and chicken as bait on the upper

reaches of the river, the state Bernama news agency said.

" God willing, we'll get the crocodile in two days' time, " Cheek was quoted

as saying by *Bernama* yesterday.
