Guest guest
Thursday September 7, 2006 Langkawi is like a paradise lost I SYMPATHISE with C. Moreton's disappointing vacation in Langkawi, " Unmemorable Langkawi vacation<http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2006/9/2/focus/15301956 & sec=\ focus> " (*The Star*, Sept 2). Our beautiful Langkawi has definitely seen better days. Being familiar with the island, I recently brought a group of locals to join me on my holiday there. Sadly, the overall impression was not good at all. Let me put my observation in brief form: What used to be the beautiful island of Pulau Bunting with its quiet, fresh water lake is now full of rubbish and monkeys. To make matters worse, the monkeys behave like rogues trying to steal from visitors. The area fenced up for bathers is filthy with plenty of catfish. Slime can even be spotted. Plastic bags and drink cans are sighted in the waters of Pulau Payar. Even on one of the islands where the boatman took us for a swim, the water was dirty! And he said that was the best available around Porto Malai. Black sand beach, but where is the black sand? Langkawi is supposed to be duty free. But almost nothing is cheaper than in Kuala Lumpur, except maybe liquor, cigarettes, chocolate and car rental. The only attraction my friends enjoyed was watching the feeding of the eagles. However, conservationist may not be too happy with this act as this may be ecologically unhealthy as the eagles may not be able to feed on their own in future. The beauty of nature must be conserved. That is what tourists come to see. The next time I visit Langkawi, I should, perhaps, just rent a car and drive around the island munching chocolates! *PATRICK TAN, Subang Jaya.*
