Guest guest
'Magical' hooks may be used in croc hunt-New Straits Times*18 Sep 2006* ------------------------------ *KUCHING: " Magical " hooks may be used to capture the elusive crocodile which killed a boy in Sungai Bako earlier this month. * Bomoh Nyaleh Mandi is contemplating getting the hooks from his home in Kampung Temelan in Lundu after the man-eater managed to elude him once again yesterday. The powerful crocodile had taken the bait attached to three thumb-sized hooks. The hooks were fixed to a thick rod made of sega rattan but as Nyaleh tried to pull the crocodile out of the river, the reptile managed to break free. On Saturday, it had also managed to snap a sega rattan rod when the 82-year-old bomoh was pulling it out of the water. Nyaleh, a veteran bomoh who had managed to track down more than 1,000 crocodiles, could only shake his head in disbelief. " It is normally not like this, " he said. Kampung Hijrah village head Lair Salleh, who is heading the operation to hunt the crocodile, said Nyaleh would consider getting his special hooks, which apparently have magical powers, if the crocodile remained elusive. Nyaleh had taken over the hunt for the crocodile from another bomoh Cheek Inu, 70, since last Wednesday. The services of Cheek, from Kampung Lubok Punggur in Gedong, was sought three days after the crocodile killed a 12-year old pupil, Mohammed Azuan Hatta, at Sungai Bako on Sept 3. Unlike Cheek who used chickens, Nyaleh uses carcasses of dogs as baits. Seven baits were placed on Friday around the area where Mohammed Azuan was attacked as he was crossing the river with another boy, Sulaiman Matsakani, 15. Sulaiman escaped with minor injuries.
