Animal Welfare Officers, Animal Welfare Board of India along with Nilesh

Bhange, General Secretary, *Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) *rescued

several parakeets from various places in Pune with the help of Forest

Department.

Volunteers from PFA and PAWS received extensive information from the

residents of Pune and Pimpari that some pet shop selling endangered

parrakeets which are protected under Wild Life Protection act 1972. Parrots

(or parakeets) are protected under various Schedules of the Wild Life

protection action 1972, mostly under Schedule IV. Immediately Dhiraj Jain

passed the information to Divisional Forest Officer, Pune Mr. Ashok Khadse

for their immediate action .

As per the information provided by volunteers, forest department swanged

into the action and planned and raided at three places in Dange Chowk,

Khadki and Pimpari.

At Dange chowk, Santosh Kamble, a parrot seller was arrested first hand

while handing over the parrots to Dhiraj Jain, PFA Member who acted as a

customer. After investigation, forest officials found more 190 parrots from

his house. Mr. Kamble and his helper Mr. Khan were arrested and

approximately 200 parrots were taken from the place.

" We were hoping to rescue a few parrots, but inside we found a full factory

like atmosphere where there were more than 100 parrots stuffed in a single

cage of size 1.5'x1.5'x1.5' and several others in other cages " , said Manoj

Oswal. He also quoted, " Parrots are caged for lifetime and they never see

the sky in thier life. "

The second raid was carried out at Lala Bhavan, Khadki bazar where 2

Mountain Parrots were found.

While the third raid was carried out at Kerala Hobbies House, Pimpari. PFA

Volunteer posing as a customer visited the pet shops and ordered for a

parrot and it was readily sold to him. Immediately, forest Officer Shri

Bhurke arrested the culprit.

Te whole operation was carried under the guidence of Mr. Ashok Khadse,

Divisional Forest Officer, Pune.

The whole process of confiscation and filing of reports was completed by 6

p.m., today evening. The parrots will be freed or rehabilitated depending on

their state of health and capability to survive in the wild. These parrots

will be inspected by the vet and then will be released back in the natural

habitat in a group when fit to release.

" Those parrots which were seized by the Wild Life Department which were

found in very pathetic condition. Some parrakeets were winged broken and

some had skin problem. They were living on thier own filth. The cages were

so cramped that they were not able to even move and they had no food and

water and parrots were literly fighting among each other for the space " ,

said Nilesh Bhange, Gen Secratary, PAWS.

" Every year 100s of parrakeets and other wild animals are captured from wild

habittat and smuggled from UP, MP to Mumbai and finally to the pet shops in

Mumbai " , said Dhiraj Jain
