Dear , Thank you very much for the comprehensive update - I agree totally that euthanasia should not be considered simply because these animals are hybrid. WSPA supporters were concerned about recent international press coverage which stated several elderly lions were in very poor health and could not be euthanased and instead would be left to die of 'natural causes'. Since you have visited and the lions appeared OK it may be that the international press is over exaggerating the condition of the lions and the photographs used may have been outdated. As you state, euthanasia should *only* be considered if it prevents prolonged suffering for a veterinary condition that cannot be treated on the advice of a qualified vet. I have written to CZA explaining this and requesting clarification on the matter. I have attached a copy of this letter for your attention - hope you think it is OK. I'm e-mailing from WSPA Asia for some advice - I've just ready your Indian Zoo report so thought you'd be in a good position to comment on the issue below. There has been recent international media coverage on the hybrid lions at Chhatbir Zoo which has resulted in several letters of complaint to WSPA international offices wanting to know why these lions cannot be euthanased to prevent prolonged suffering? I understand that the Central Zoo Authority has created a 'retirement home' for the lions and they do receive veterinary care and special diets but all the newspaper articles state that " Indian law and traditions forbid the killing of animals, so the unhealthy animals will be allowed to die out rather than being destroyed " . This is obviously a cause for concern. Do you know anything about the situation at the zoo or have any suggestions on whether it is appropriate for WSPA to write to either the CZA or the Zoo to express concern over the apparent non-euthanasia policy for these lions? Thanks in advance for your help.
