Animal Performance without registration for same with Animal Welfare

Board of India.

 

Hon.Madam,

 

It has been informed that a polo match with elephants is being organized in

Jaipur on 18 November 06. No body can exhibit, train or perform any animal

without registration with Animal Welfare Board of India. Which is violation of

Sec.22 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 and Performing Animals

(Registration) Rules 2001.

Elephants participating in the events like cycling, walking on two legs,

sitting on stool or participate in Polo Match are trained with extremely brutal

methods that inflict pain, domination and fear. They use Ankush (bullhooks) and

keeping them chained for long hours to train them to obey theircommand.

 

The state is responsible to protect the wildlife in their natural surroundings

and Rajsthan is not the home for elephants.These huge animals are kept on move

on hot tarred roads for days together, exposing them to Roadside accidents and

cruelty. This is an issue of protecting endangered wild animals and it is thus

necessary for you to take immediate action. Instead of allowing people to

exploit elephants for such

pursuits, we humbly request that before granting permission for Elephant Polo in

your state, it may be ensured that the Owners, organisers and trainers are

registered for exhibition, training and performance of animals under Performing

Animals (Registration) Rules 2001(under Prevention of Cruelty to animals act

1960), with the

Animal Welfare Board of India, Chennai.(Tele: 044-24454935,24454958 Fax:

044-24454330). We request you to issue directions to the concerned officials for

stopping this cruelty in case they are not registered.
