Province to hold dog show to please animal lovers

TO APPEASE the diplomatic community who once

criticized Benguet over a misconception that it

intended to legalize the sale of dog meat, the

Provincial Government decided to hold a production

making dogs the main performers.

Various breeds of dogs will take center stage on

November 30 in line with the joint celebration of the

" 106th Benguet Foundation Anniversary " and " 2nd Adivay

Festival " .

Provincial Administrator Modesto Andong said the idea

behind the inclusion of a dog show in the highlights

of events is to clear the misconception that had

circulated against the province when it earlier passed

a resolution advising law enforcement agencies like

the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group

(CIDG) to coordinate with proper government agencies

such as the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) before

conducting raids on restaurants serving dog meat.

The measure created a delusion that provincial

officials are on to legalize the commercialization of

dog meats, which officials vehemently denied. Several

animal welfare advocates from all over the globe wrote

the province not to push through with the plan.

While the Animal Welfare Act allows the slaughtering

of dogs to be used in indigenous rituals, it bans the

butchering of the animal for commercial purposes.

" We want to show that the people of Benguet are not

cruel to dogs, we are also lovers of the animal, " said

Andong.

The pet show will be held at the Benguet State

University (BSU) ground, which will also be the venue

for the agro-industrial trade fair.

The joint Benguet Day and Advivay celebration is

scheduled from November 8 to December 2.
