They pleaded guilty to illegal possession of the reptiles and subjecting them to inhumane treatment. The Chinese nationals were Qoua Chik Wee, 37; Yan Nai Sheng, 24; Yan Lee Maw, 20; Chan Chee Tieow, 22; Yan Saan, 48 and John Yu, 49. The locals were Md Kibri Ismail, 43, of Felda Bukit Sagu, and S Suman, 24, of Semambu Baru. All were unrepresented. They were arrested during a marine police raid at the Tokong Batu Tiga jetty in Jalan Gambang at 3pm on Oct 20. They and about 20 others were at that time loading crates, containing the monitor lizards, from two lorries into a waiting boat. The others, however, managed to escape. The monitor lizards seized were believed to be sold as exotic food in Thailand and Hong Kong. The reptiles, which are protected species, can fetch about US$40 (RM148) each there. State Wildlife Protection and National Park Department officer Wan Azali Wan Alwi prosecuted before magistrate Che Noralashiken Abdul Razak.
