No one saw the actual collision, but the baby elephant was spotted at around 9am limping just some 100m from the turnoff to the East-West Highway before falling by the side of the road with a loud thump. A crowd soon gathered as curious motorists pulled over while the young elephant's wailing drew more people from nearby houses. Curious passers-by taking a look at the injured elephant at the Jeli-Gerik road, some 100m from the turnoff to the East-West Highway in Jeli on Tuesday. According to department director Pazil Abdul Fatah, the animal's right foreleg was fractured. " We will determine the extent of the injury. If it's serious, the animal will be transported to the National Elephant Conservation Centre in Kuala Gandah (in Pahang) for more intensive care, treatment and rehabilitation, " he said.
