Guest guest
Thursday November 2, 2006 - The Star Baby jumbo has bad bruise, not fracture By C.A. ZULKIFLE JELI: The male baby elephant believed to have been knocked down by a heavy vehicle on the Jeli-Grik road in Bukit Melintang on Tuesday is back on its feet. The calf suffered just a bad bruise and not a fracture as suspected earlier. According to state Wildlife and National Parks Department director Pazil Abdul Fatah, the elephant stood up at 10.15am yesterday to loud cheers from a crowd of villagers and motorists who had stopped to look at the animal. The wild elephant had limped for a while before collapsing by the roadside on Tuesday. Veterinarians bound the elephant with a chain so that they could bandage the injured leg and treat it. They gave the baby jumbo antibiotics and painkillers, and fed it bananas and leaves. The veterinarians are optimistic of a full recovery because the elephant had waved its ears. According to Pazil, an elephant waving its ears was a good sign because it meant that the animal was in good spirits. Before the elephant got up, children who had gathered at the scene caressed its body as it lay on the ground. Experts from the national elephant conservation centre in Kuala Gandah, Pahang, are expected to arrive today to ascertain the status of the elephant's recovery. " We need to determine whether the elephant can be set free to return to its family or requires further treatment, " said Pazil.
