Guest guest
The petition site(http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/857409235) seems appropriate. It is nice to know that Ms Jill Robinson MBE has signed the petition. Thank you, Ms Robinson, for your support. Cartier has sponsored Elephant Polo before so it is difficult to believe the contention that only the naming of the event was a mistake and that the event in reality is 'An Event to Demonstrate that the Ankush is not Necessary and to give the 105 captive elephants something to do which they enjoy'. Attached is a list of firms that have sponsored elephant polo. One really wonders how many of them have done so for the sake of circus like entertainment or out of a philanthropic urge to sponsor 'Events to Demonstrate that the Ankush is not Necessary and to give captive elephants something to do which they enjoy': 1) Seiko 2)Starbucks Coffee 3)Hua Hin Hoteliers Club 4)World Elephant Polo Association 5)Chivas Regal 6) Cartier 7)Mercedes Benz 8)Sandalford Wines 9)Pricewaterhouse Coopers 10)UBC Satellite TV 11)American Express 12)DHL 13)Shanghai Tang 14) Starbucks Coffee 15)Singapore Polo Club 16)Tickle and the Ivories 17)Thailand Property http://www.thaielepolo.com/sponsors.htm All these companies have been involved in elephant polo events that have in all probability used the ankus so it would be a revelation if they all suddenly changed their position for 'cruelty free elephant polo'. It is obvious that this event was planned solely as an entertainment event that has little to do with promotion of animal rights/welfare/conservation. Heavy moolah is flying in Jaipur for the event. It remains to be seen who bags what share of the profits using animal welfare as an excuse and what percentage is used for genuine elephant welfare in the future. The organisers, however, should not be surprised in the near future if they have to deal with issues apart from filling their pockets since extensive arrangements have been made to that effect at the requisite level.
