Guest guest
While the court case in Kandy is still pending (next date will be in January), the Mayor of Gampola, a small town 25 km from Kandy, has cotacted SOFA and requested to start an ABC Programme there. At first I was delighted and promised him all the possible cooperation, but in the course of the conversation I realised, that he has hopes, that we would basicly fund the Programme and he only has to provide the site, then I had to tell him, that our funds are not even sufficient for Kandy and that we had to minimise our field-clinics due to shortage of funds. However we will meet in the course of this week and see whether the Health Ministry would release funds. In the meantime I received another information, which confirmed something we had suspected since long: The dog-catchers of the Central Province, the Province, to which Gampola also belongs, catch dogs in Gampola and release them in various places in the countryside because they receive a lot of complains about dogs on the streets of the Muslim dominated town, while villagers are usually more tolerant. Of course we would have to ask them to stop this stupid practice if we were to start an ABC in Gampola. What is very upsetting about this matter: most of the dogs, displaced by the local authorities are domestic and community-dogs, they had a place to sleep and were fed, but now they have really become strays. I am afraid this happens not only in Gampola, but all over Sri Lanka. Since they are not supposed to kill now, they thought of an easy way out to respond to complaints. I have hope, hat the Mayor will understand this point. We'll keep you updated Regards Padma
