Guest guest
Friday November 10, 2006 - The Star Think of animals when building roads THE LATEST road accidents involving a baby elephant and eight buffaloes is an under-discussed problem that demands immediate attention from both the Public Works and Transport Ministries. Roads criss-crossing the country are known killing grounds for wildlife. The killing and hurting of animals goes on every day of the year on our roads without being noticed. It is not just that animals die when hit by passing cars and trucks; the roads disrupt migratory routes and break up habitats. With the fragmentation of landscapes by highways, animal populations are divided and they face a lot of problems. Engineers should have a little restraint and sensitivity in road building. In the construction of highways, they should take into account the need for roads with overpasses and underpasses. With increasing wildlife being killed on the roads, the two ministries should consider a similar kind of Ops Sikap to educate, inform drivers of animal crossings through signages along highways, and go on a publicity drive to save wildlife. A little sense and sensibility should prevail in the construction of highways by roping in wildlife biologists and transportation engineers to discuss and solve the problem of roadkills before implementation of road projects.
