Guest guest
Dear Friends, as we mentioned in our last update, Gampola, a small town near Kandy is interested to start a humane dog-population control programme. The Mayor of Gampola contacted us again today also and we made an appointment for coming Monday. We don't have the funds right now to start another programme... we can hardly cover all of Kandy ... but we should not let pass by the chance to encourage the Mayor to work out a humane solution for the stray-dog-problem in Gampola. However during the telephone conversations we had with him so far it became already clear, that he has a big doubt, whether the promised funds by the Health Ministry will be available. We will try to convince him, that dog-population-control is a public responsibility and that he should find a way of raising public funds for this, after all the President of Sri Lanka himself has ordered to stop the practice of killing dogs and to start humane programmes to reduce the stray-population. However we also have to raise funds for the Gampola dogs because we will have to monitor the programme and at least one person will have to be there permanently to ensure, that humane methods are used in handling, catching, aftercare etc and we may also have to spend on medicines etc because sterilizing the dogs is not enough, parasites, skin-ailments, TVT and other common diseases should be treated. Please let us know if anyone can help to get this started... while in Kandy we work against many obstacles from the local authorities, here we have their support... a chance, which should not be missed.
