Guest guest
Link: http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/details.asp?id=feb1707\City4 Hundreds pay homage to dead elephant By A Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, Feb 16 – Hundreds of people today went to the site in the Amchang wildlife sanctuary, where an injured elephant had died on Wednesday, to pay homage to the dead animal. Braving inclement weather and an hour's walk along the rugged terrain, the people, coming mostly from Patarkuchi area, offered puja in honour of the dead elephant, put floral wreaths on it, and gave it a solemn burial. Yesterday also, many people had gone to the site to pay homage to the elephant. The elephant, a sub-adult female, died under tragic circumstances after it had been injured, apparently due to an accidental fall. The people who gathered at the site felt that timely action from the Forest Department might have saved the elephant. They also resented the fact that Forest personnel could arrive promptly with hacksaws yesterday to cut off the tusks of the elephant whereas they failed to show the same urgency in saving the ailing animal. The Forest Department, however, maintains that the animal was seriously injured and could not be saved despite its best efforts. Amchang sanctuary is a well-known elephant habitat on the city outskirts. Among other fauna, the sanctuary is famous for its big herds of elephant.
