Guest guest
They sound good, but they do contain egg and dairy (not vegan). My son has a dairy allergy and I have a mild allergy to fungus/yeast/moulds so I can't have eat it either (we're vegan here). Sigh. I was hoping we could 'cheat' and get it this year (I've seen them in Whole Foods and a few other stores, too, in IL) but never checked them out. I've not tried the Tofurkey, and it seems very overpriced so I guess I'll make my Seitan Turkey roast instead. Thanks for the tip though, I'm sure others on the list will be excited about it. Guest guest
It has eggs. and there was a controversy, since it's made from a type of mycoprotein they say was making people ill. http://www.wired.com/politics/law/news/2002/08/54487<http://www.wired.com/politi\ cs/law/news/2002/08/54487> Politics<http://www.wired.com/politics> : Law<http://www.wired.com/politics/law> <http://feeds.wired.com/wired/politics/law> Pseudo Meat Called Unhealthy Associated Press <http://www.wired.com/services/feedback/letterstoeditor>08.12.02 | 11:47 AM WASHINGTON -- A health advocacy group accused the government Monday of allowing fake meat made from fungus to be sold even though it makes people sick, and demanded that the product, known as Quorn, be recalled. The Center for Science in the Public Interest<http://www.cspinet.org/> said it received reports from 33 people who had suffered vomiting, diarrhea and other ailments after eating Quorn. A North Carolina man broke out in hives and had trouble breathing, the group said. Quorn is the trade name for mycoprotein, which is used as a substitute for ground beef and chicken. It's also used in lasagna and fettuccine Alfredo. " Quorn mycoprotein has been proven to cause severe digestive reactions, " Michael Jacobson, CSPI's executive director, said in a letter to the Food and Drug Administration<http://www.fda.gov/>. " Those reactions have led to fainting and dehydration, which could be life-threatening. " Because mycoprotein makes some people sick, it " cannot be considered generally recognized as safe " as designated by the FDA. " Consumer health and wellness is the number one priority at Quorn Foods, " the company said in a statement Monday. Labels on all Quorn products identify mycoprotein as the main ingredient and describe it as being " mushroom in origin, " which the company says helps consumers relate it to other foods and alerts anyone that might be affected by mushroom ingredients. But critics say that description is a stretch and that the FDA should have studied it more before it hit the shelves in American supermarkets. " The FDA's stance with regard to Quorn has been 'get sick first, ask questions later,' " Jacobson said. " This product was cavalierly waved through by the FDA with an alarming lack of curiosity " even though the government had seen evidence that it made people sick. CSPI, citing documents it obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, said one study showed nearly 10 percent of people who ate Quorn reported feeling nauseated or sick to their stomachs. An FDA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agency was reviewing the information provided by CSPI and would evaluate all available data on Quorn before deciding how to proceed. Quorn, introduced in Britain in 1985, arrived in U.S. supermarkets in January. Its popularity in Europe now rivals that of soy burgers and other meat substitutes. - carol sobczak<cpsobczak < > Monday, October 29, 2007 5:08 PM Re: Best Veg Turkey I've ever had!!! Guest guest
That's what we usually do! Back when I ate meat I was always so stuffed after the dinner I could barely manage dessert. Now I just skip the meat and have all the veggies and rolls and whatever, and then have room for sampling each of the different pies etc. :-) That said, we did buy a Tofurky dinner for one occasion last year, and we really enjoyed it. My mom decided to taste it, and her comment was " Hmm. That actually tastes good. " Heather robin koloms wrote: > > Why not just bring/eat the sides? Guest guest
My mom fed it to me in the stuffing when I was new vegetarian and dind't know all the things to avoid and question. Now we bring bbq veggie dog slices and a veggie side like a veggie casserole type thing in case we can't eat the stuffing. My 3 yr old loves the hot dogs so it's a sure fire hit each year! --- Vegan Linda <veganlinda wrote: > If it was just us, I would, but my husband's family > will try to get my 3 year old to eat turkey > > Sent from my iPhone > > On Oct 30, 2007, at 4:53 AM, robin koloms > <rkoloms wrote: > > Why not just bring/eat the sides? Guest guest
The only Tofurkey product I've tried were the beer brats; there is not enough mustard and grilled onions in the world to make them taste good. Heather Hossfeld <hlh4850 wrote: That's what we usually do! Guest guest
Linda, I highly recommend the Real Food Daily cookbook. I am in Los Angeles and I actually order or cook their Thanksgiving meal every year (depending if we want to bake or just heat and spend the day having family time without cooking). All of the food in the cookbook is vegan and AMAZING. We usually have: Butternut squash soup House salad with tahini watercress dressing Garlic mashed potatoes with a golden gravy Roasted fall and winter vegetables Faux turkey breasts made from tempeh and tofu Corn sage stuffing Mashed yams Cranberry relish Pecan or pumpkin pie for dessert. The only recipe not in the cookbook is the pumpkin pie All items everyone loves and do not even realize they are vegan except for the faux turkey breast AND everyone loves it, they just think it tastes more like stuffing than turkey. Here is the link: http://www.realfood.com/cookbook.htm we have been eating their food and recipes for Thanksgiving for 4 years now and I have to tell you it is amazing. Guest guest
Obviously, we could all fill a book with our opinions about faux meat. I really like most of it, especially Tofurkey. I only buy one every other month or so, but when I do, I try to make a big feast with cranberries, extra stuffing, etc. so that it feels like a Thanksgiving dinner. Love it. I have also tried the Quorn chickn patties on a bun w/ bbq sauce and my family LOVED it and did not feel ill afterwards. RE: Thanksgiving ideas! Always look at the Vegetarian Times holiday issue. Last year they had the cutest little cornacopias (sp?) made from wrapping dough around bugle-shaped foil, then stuffing with roasted baby veggies. Guest guest
Has anyone ever tried the Loma Linda Turkeyless Roll? It's probably not the healthiest one on the market, but it is good. I've injected broth into before, but it usually squirts out the through the holes. Then I usually baste it with some sesame oil and a small amount of Braggs or soy sauce. It can be served with stuffing on the side. Even non-vegetarians love this stuff! Usually you can order these through your health food store or they might have them in stock around Thanksgiving. Nice with gravy too!
Guest guest
I haven't had the Loma Linda stuff in a LONG time. I've never seen it in the stores around here in IL, but in Florida they had them at pretty much any 'health food' store (like what whole foods and wild oats, etc are now). It's been nearly 10 years since I had their stuff. I've heard their stuff is also distributed through 7th Day Adventist Churches (if they have a food- buying/co-op type clubs at their church). I'm not sure if any around us do, but it could be an option for some folks who may not have veggie stuff available elsewhere/close. missie On 11/1/07, atmakk <atmak wrote: > > Has anyone ever tried the Loma Linda Turkeyless Roll? Guest guest
Hey, Missie, I've seen that Loma Linda stuff (*shudder* -I'm sorry, that stuff has always frightened me) at this little health food store at the Harlem Irving Plaza (at Harlem and Irving, believe it or not) called Plaza Health. I wasn't clear from your message if you wanted some as well, but I thought I'd give you the heads-up. Marla > I haven't had the Loma Linda stuff in a LONG time. Guest guest
The stuff I recall liking was some kind of veggie burger mix thing. I lived off the stuff when I was in college. LOL. I've thought of it a little bit here and there, but it's good to know. I'm up that way a lot for work (the office is up there, so when I need to go there I'm close) so maybe I'll stop by one of these times (maybe tomorrow, since I have to go in after my photo shoot). Thanks for the heads up. I remember liking that one - I'd make it into a 'loaf' as it seemed to work best that way, instead of as veggie burgers. I think there was something else they made that I liked, too, but I have no idea what that one was now. I take it you don't like their stuff. LOL. Guest guest
The heck with Turkey anything! I stuff a Squash. I realized that the only thing I liked about this holiday was mushed up bread with nuts and celery (being a carb lover) so I find a beautiful round pumkin shaped squash, take of the stem part like carving a pumpkin and stuff that, replace the top, and it very attractive! Don't leave it in too long or it will be too soft. You can stick carrot sticks in it and stuff to make it look like a turkey, but personally, I'd rather not go there. We do The Morning Star type sausages and stuff and I've heard someone call it " that Loma Linda stuff " but I'm hoping it's come a way since those days. My favorite analog type stuff is Veet. Do you guys have it where ever you are? I really think Tofurky is Nasty. Missie Ward <mszzzi wrote: The stuff I recall liking was some kind of veggie burger mix thing. Guest guest
I don't know. I think it just says 'soy breast' on it. I don't buy it very often - I don't go to whole foods much. Its a nice treat to get when I do go there though. I can get most of what I want/need at Krogers in the Natural Foods section.
