Guest guest
I'm having my first child in February and I plan on breast feeding. I've been looking into all the creams for sore/cracked nipples and they all contain lanolin! The only other alternative I've seen is using olive oil. Does anyone else know of any other products I could use? Thanks, Tonia
Guest guest
I found that I never needed it in the first place. If you do have cracked nipples, or god forbid a thrush bout - you can use Venetian Violet (I think that's the spelling of it). You can look it up on www.kellymom.com -also has a TON of amazing breastfeeding info (at least it used to, I've not had to look at it for a few years -my son is 4, and he nursed till he was 22mo's and stopped on his own). Kellymom has other alternatives: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipplehealing.html What helped me was to let them 'breathe'/air dry, or blot with a towel (after you bathe). Olive oil, and probably food grade Apricot or Almond or Canola oil might also work - you can probably run it past your doctor/midwife - or even call up your future pediatrician/family Doc/whatever and ask them. I think with the popular creams you have to wash it off before you nurse anyway, so maybe a food grade oil would work the same way. Maybe even a non-hydrogenated vegetable shortening. LOL. (I'm kidding, but it sure soudns like it would work. I think back when we were kids, it was used for diaper rash - so it could work for that too, maybe). See where they stand on these things before you pick them (it's going to be time pretty soon, may as well get a jump on it while you can. LOL). Congrats, and a healthy/happy/fast/easy labor to you! Guest guest
I think the little jars of " Un-Petroleum Jelly " - made from a variety of plant oils are still on the market. btw, we wiped olive oil on our son's bottom at every diaper change and he never had diaper rash. otherwise, I would just try some saturated (solid at room temp) plant fats now on a small spot on your wrist to see if you are sensitive then you can try a dab on your baby's skin to confirm that they are not sensitive to it either, - that way you'll have some idea if it's worth trying before you are desperate and try it without testing it, and they ingest some left over residue on your nipple and react to it somehow. easily available in stores or online-- pure coconut oil - warm it just a little to make it more like a body cream- but still can be kind of waxy non hydrogenated veggie shortening in a tub, found in health food stores, (I think it's spectrum brand) is pure palm oil. It's a little softer at room temp than coconut oil if you find a veg fat or oil that works for you, it will be a better bargain for you too, as little tubes of ointment (veg or not) can cost as much as a big jar, bottle or tub of organic plant fat. good luck and best wishes! Guest guest
You may not need a cream -- first of all, hopefully you won't get sore/cracked nipples! But if you do, try just expressing some milk onto them and letting it dry on there. Make sure you let your nipples dry completely quite often, and if you're leaking make sure you change the pads in your bra regularly. Whenever you can, wait a few minutes after your baby is finished nursing before you do up your bra. Good luck with your baby! Guest guest
Earth Mama Angel Baby makes a natural nipple butter with olive, calendula, shea butter, and cocoa butter that smells awesome and is vegan, but I have to tell you that nothing works on the nipples as well as lanolin. I broke down and used it when my baby was born and I think it's the only thing that kept up breastfeeding through those first few really rough weeks. I tried everything else but nothing worked as well as lanolin. Whatever you do don't use anything like mineral oil or something that's not food grade or anything that has to be washed off the nipple prior to breastfeeding. Wash your nipples only with water, no soap, to try and minimize any kind of removal of your natural oil secretions. Guest guest
The most natural thing that works is to express milk on the area. Guest guest
I just used plain old vitamin e oil, or jojoba. Doesn't Weleda have a whole baby thing? Guest guest
The kind I've seen without lanolin, but never used so can't personally recommend, is called Natural Nipple Butter. Do a Google search and several places to order it will come right up. I have had good luck just using breastmilk left to air dry. Congrats and I hope you have a fantastic birth. Guest guest
I have been nursing for 10 months and never needed such thing. Apply breastmilk on the nipples and let them dry out after nursing. The soreness is normal usually gone after 3 weeks. , " Heather Clark " <iris777888 wrote: > > The kind I've seen without lanolin, but never used so can't personally > recommend, is called Natural Nipple Butter. Guest guest
Congratulations!!! I had my first child in March 07 and had the same concern you had. I am still breastfeeding, and I guess I am lucky to never have had the sore/cracked nipples issue. My lactation nurse said if you get a good latch, you shouldn't have that issue. She also said instead of lanolin - because it is not good for the baby to ingest/digest - that you can express a tiny bit of milk onto your nipple and let it air dry. She recommended Vitamin E Oil if I felt I needed something just in case, but I never had to use it. Guest guest
I never had to use anything for my first two, but for my last I did...I have over active let down and the baby was trying not to drown LOL and doing this clicking thing to slow down the milk. I was amazed after almost 8 years of nursing without stopping that I ended up with cracked nipples. :-) Linda http://triballife.net/ A Marketplace for a Better World Susan <virgo.vegan Friday, November 16, 2007 7:03:58 AM Re: lanolin alternatives Congratulations! !!
