Guest guest
You need to change pediatricians now. My daughter was initially raised vegan but began to eat some vegetarian foods (ice cream, cheese pizza etc) when she was old enough and wanted to try. She is much better now about asking does the ice cream have cow's milk in it, etc. She is almost 8 now so still young but lots of people have raised veg children since birth and I would think any doctor worth her salt would know its healthier to raise children on vegetarian diets. Guest guest
I would seriously question this dr's nutrition education and knowledge. There is only one nutrient that is available in meat (and other animal products) but not available in plants and that is Vitamin B12. Humans in the past used to get it from the tiny bits of soil on our veggies or in our water from the bacteria that produces B12. Now Vegans can get Vitamin B12 (from bacteria sources not animal sources) from supplements or from fortified foods such as soymilk or breakfast cereals. But read the label as not all brands are fortified. Humans need Vitamin B12 their entire lives, not just until age 5, so I'm not sure what this Dr. meant. Permanent nerve damage can occur if you do not get enough B12 -but your body is also good at storing it and recycling it -so you can go a little while without it- but it's safer to make sure you get a regular supply of it with supplements or fortified foods. The elderly sometimes have trouble absorbing it and may make less Intrinsic factor in their gut, (which is needed to absorb it), so that's why sometimes you hear of elderly folks needing to get a B12 shot. Although some research has shown that it can be absorbed sublingually, that is, holding a B12 supplement under your tongue and letting it dissolve. Guest guest
It's amazing what Dr.s will tell you! Of course it depends on their training and fears. Most think you have to eat meat for vitamin B12 but it is in other things as well. Also, lots of people need B 12 because they have trouble with absorbtion. In the end I always think we've lived for many thousands of years, were strong, and had better teeth without all the conveniences we have now! Pythagorians were vegetarians AND they didn't eat beans! I'm sure the Dr. would tell them they couldn't live! robin koloms <rkoloms wrote: You need a new doctor; a family practioner will likely be more open that a pediatrician. Guest guest
does he like soft cooked/mashed beans? they're a good source of iron and even more is absorbed if eaten with a Vit C source-- OJ, tomatoes, broccoli, potatoes, bell pepper etc. also, watch out for spinach, chard etc which contains oxalic acid- which can decrease iron absorption, better to use other dark leafy greens for now. Peace, D >Amy Merwin <amymerwin >Nov 19, 2007 7:03 AM > > meat nutrition > >I can sympathize with you-my baby's Dr. (he's 18 months) keeps asking if we give him fish or meat yet and I just keep saying 'no.' What worries me is IRON because he has pretty much needed a supplement since he was born. I imagine this is related to him being a preemie but I can't help wonder if he shouldn't eat meat. I think I would rather just keep giving him the supplement than meat but I'm not sure. He's not anemic, thank goodness, it's just that his iron 'stores' are low (the ferrin). So for now we're OK. >Best wishes to you, >Amy > > > ______________________________\ ____ >Be a better pen pal. >Text or chat with friends inside Mail. Guest guest
It's always amazing reading all respon, keep me strong and confidence. To Robin and Renee, Well, the doctor I'm talking about is my mother in law, BINGO, though I go to other pediatric for my baby, yet her voice always ring beside my hear, make me annoy and ear-sick LOL. And I'm staying in Medan, Indonesia. To Kerry, tks for the input, but there is no marmite nor vegemite I can find here. Will try to get vegemite next year when my cousin stop by here. To Shannon, actually there is no other kid around here that really vegan from birth who I can show her that vegan is totally healthy and much more reasonable that meat eater. My baby is fine and smart if I may refer so, but then, my in law keep pushing and stressing that it doesn't prove anything yet, as it still long way to go and her medical background basically stated that it is important to get all nutrition from all source include meat for all kids. Annoy isnt it ?! To Rose, tks alot for the sharing, will try to find anything with B12 here. To Amy, I'm giving my baby iron supplement, it called -Ferlin- or -Ferriz- here but it is manufactured under licence of USA. Ferlin more strong on iron taste while Ferriz is combine with strawerry flavour. My baby prefer the strawberry ones :-) A drop a day will be enough according to the guidance. Guest guest
A doctor for a mother in law! I thought I had it bad. My husband is Polish and his mother is a nurse. As recently as 5 years ago there were court cases where children were actually taken from their parents in Poland for bringing them up vegetarian, and when she found out I was going to raise ours vegetarian she clipped all the articles she could find about them! It didn't help that my older son was skinny skinny skinny, and I caught her more than once slipping him meat. The thing that FINALLY worked, was whenever she said something about " nutrition " I said " oh, that's really interesting. I'd love to read about it. " She couldn't produce the literature, accidently found a lot of PRO-vegetarin literature in the process, and eventually shut up. Good luck! I know exactly where you're coming from! oh, and vegemite is very popular in Australia, maybe a befriended tourist could send you some. , yani jeni <yani_jeni wrote: > > It's always amazing reading all respon, keep me strong > and confidence. > > To Robin and Renee, Well, the doctor I'm talking about > is my mother in law, BINGO, though I go to other > pediatric for my baby, yet her voice always ring > beside my hear, make me annoy and ear-sick LOL.
