Guest guest
Is your son growing at a consistent rate? If so, I wouldn't worry about it so much right now. Three of my kids were great eaters at this age but two I was so panicky about, I ended up consulting a food therapist. She said that they were eating and growing fine - just grazers and picky. They still grew consistently so I ended up not worrying. I ended up making pancakes with spinach, nutmeg, and nutritional yeast in them much more often than I wanted to but they would eat those any time I gave them to them. I also gave them slices of ex-firm tofu that they loved - especially when teething as the coolness of the refrigerated tofu felt good on their teeth. At 15 months of age, I fed my kids what I prepared for my husband and I - prepared appropriately for them. That made a bit of difference in their eating habits also as they liked eating what mommy and daddy were eating. Just try different things. You may hit on something he really likes and will eat. I really don't think dairy milk is the answer. Ask those who are pushing you to give that to him what their rationale is. Soymilk has everything dairy milk except the chemicals, pus, and hormones (go to www.notmilk.com to find out more). Maybe trying a different soymilk would work. I used Edensoy and my kids loved it - I despised it. There are so many varieties out there with different tastes to them. Maybe you could experiment and find one he likes. From what I understand, however, children do not need milk of any kind as long as they are getting the nutrients (i.e. calcium) they would normally get from a milk from other sources. Good Luck. Guest guest
I know exactly what you are going through! My son was the same way. Seeing the forest through the trees now, I realize that he (and your son) would be the same way with or without animal foods. Some toddlers just aren't big consumers and are going to be skinny. But hopefully they take in enough to be healthy and the appetite will get better (my son is 17 now. Still skinny and picky , but eats a lot. I still follow him around with food Skinny is definitely better than fat! I keep telling him that! Does he like baked goods? My son was a big carbo eater. He still is. I used to make muffins and pancakes and freeze them and give them to him all the time. I tried to pack as many healthy things in them as he would tolerate. Same with cookies. I remember being so frustrated when he would pick out the chocolate chips out of the healthy cookies I had made! I would go ahead and add extra flax oil to those baked goods to make them higher in calories. Also try elbow pasta tossed with nutritional yeast, soy milk and margarine. There is also a vegan mac n cheese mix from Road's End Organics. It's whole wheat and easy to make. How about adding flax oil to smoothies or to his yogurt? Try spreading avocado on crackers or toast. We love this with Spike seasoning on it! Soup! So healthy. I would really really work on getting him to like soup. Just keep serving it. My son never liked it and still doesn't. Bums me out! My daughter (12) loves it and I raised her on it. Good luck! Guest guest
I don't have any links right now, but I remember reading that it is natural for a young toddler around that age to become very picky about food. It's tied into evolution: it was dangerous for a newly walking toddler (who could more easily escape from the family cave) to put things in his/her mouth, so the toddlers who survived were the ones who didn't like putting new tastes in their mouth at that stage. As long as your child isn't losing weight and continues to be full of energy, it's just a short stage and you don't have to worry too much. Guest guest
The book is published by New Trends Publishing, Inc., which seems to be the publishing mouthpiece for Sally Fallon, the president of the Weston A. Price foundation. Go back through the archives of this group to see what has been said before on the subject of soy, Fallon, and WAP. Basically, the book is a propaganda piece that is not based in bona fide scientific research. Liz

" ~ Joseph Joubert (1754 - 1824) Gayle; Thanks for the support & advice. He does like the extra firm tofu (however, I always cook it now after some recent scares regarding some tofu recalls). Still not so interested consistently in avados. I think he probably just falls into that " grazer " category. Today I've tried not so much making him sit in his high chair for all 3 meals, but gave him his lunch on the run. He ate pretty well that way...1 bite here, 1 bite there while playing. I think he is growing consistently (gained 1.5 lbs b/n 12 & 14 months & grew an inch), but I worry, especially as my mother (an ob- gyn nurse) is really pressuring me to get some fat & calories in him. She is not pushy, so I think it is her way of encouraging me to pay attention as she is really concerned. I kind of giggle at the thought of asking them what their rationale at giving him whole milk would be, they " KNOW " they are right as that is how they were raised and they raised their children. They see nothing wrong with milk & think I am brainwashed by media, or whatever. If you can remember how you made those pancakes I would love to try that recipe. If all 5 of your vegan babes loved them, chances are pretty good that my boy may enjoy them as well. thanks again, Stacey

Guest guest
Just a bit of info on " The Whole Soy Story " . If the author, Kaayla Daniels were actually correct, I would be a mess. I've been consuming soy products for a very long time and have never had any of the problems Daniels insists it causes. My children have consumed it since conception. They are almost 11 - all developing normally - all either average or gifted. They have none of the problems Daniels insists soy causes. I have spoken with my Endocrinologist. He said soy does not affect the thyroid as Daniels insists. I happen to have an under active thyroid but had it years and years before I started consuming any soy products at all (my mother has it, my two brothers have it, and my sister had it and none of them consume soy. Sounds kind of like it's hereditary for me) and it has gotten no worse because of the soy I consume. The " research " Daniels did (and I do use the word research very lightly) was funded by the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) - an organization notorious for it's avid support of the dairy and beef industries. She was paid by them and I believe works for them. I could be wrong on that last part but when the other things are true, you have to wonder how unbiased her " research " actually was. That being said, one should never rely solely on one food for all the nutrients necessary to be healthy and any food can be hazardous to one's health if not consumed in moderation. People in Asia have consumed soy for 100's of years and they have no significant thyroid problems or any increase in any of the other things Daniels' " research " suggests above and beyond that which populations in other countries who do not consume soy products on such a regular basis have. In fact, I think they may be lower in their incident rates of the same. Moderation and variety are the keys to a healthy and beneficial diet. I have never heard anyone advocate an exclusively soy diet. That would be silly. I have not, however seen any credible evidence that even remotely suggests that consuming soy products in moderation is detrimental to a human body. Guest guest
How about vegan mac and cheese? even my suddenly picky 5 year old will eat it like crazy! (white beans, nutritional yeast, sauteed onions and a 'butter " or oil mixture of your liking) Have you used earth balance/soy garden " butters " ? Have you tried sunlower seed butter (just in case nuts are an issue, seeds usually don't have the same issues). Remember at 15 months, he still needs a LOt more fat then an adult. Other issues/questions at work: has he just gotten or working on new teeth (especialy the dreaded 2 year molars).. food may hurt the mouth...(try cold " smoothie " pops- frozen fruit, protein powder, soy/rice milk, liquid dha complex oil mix, wheat germ, frozen in popsicle form.. my kids eat that for breakfast most days in the summer!).. Has he just learned a new skill, or finished a growth spurt (many kids tin out as they grow up, then gain a bit more) Also- tastes are different.. My son will not cannot stand tomatoes (except organic ketchup and pizza-not regular sauce) won't touch em- I eat tomatoes like candy, as does dh. Try different things. Organic ketchup helps through picky stages, as does any other " dip " they like- make tofu sticks, roll them in crushed sesame seeds, then toast or fry.. dip in ketchup, vegan 'mayo " ..I make a lentil loaf every sunday then make it into sandwiches or " sticks " again...toddlers tend to love hand foods! Any veggies or fruits he already likes- give him a dip to go with it.. we eat a lot of " crunchy " apples (apple slices with nut/seed butter, sprinkled with wheat germ)... if he likes yogurt, can you add in a little dha oil and/or wheat germ to 'fatten it' up a bit? Guest guest
Hi, We're still looking for ways to get our daughter (2 years) to eat, but when she was your son's age, my husband developed a vegetable waffle recipe that was (and still is) a big hit! We make a big batch and freeze them. So many people from our parent group requested the recipe that my husband put it online at www.vegetablewaffle.com. Good luck, Jessica --------- Need Help/Suggestions Feeding Vegan 15M Posted by: " insanepup " insanepup roddthorny Sun Dec 2, 2007 8:30 am (PST) Howdy; I just joined this group in hopes that I can get some help in putting some weight on my 15 month old vegan boy.? Guest guest
Don't stress about the chub factor. As long as he is healthy and active you have nothing to worry about. I have 2 vegan children aged 6 and 3.5. The six year old has always been very fussy, she has never been chubby and has always grown slowly. The 3.5 year old weighs more than his sister, ahs always been chubby, is still picky, but eats more volume. It is nothing to do with being vegan - just genetics! The doctor sent us off to a paedatrician when my daughter was a tot - he was not at all concerned about her diet - he said her buttocks were rounded, and she was obviously active and that was all he was concerned about. I was worried at one stage about her eating and tried this and that, looked everwhere for advice. I have now learned to relax about it. If they are hungry they will eat. The best piece of advice I ever had, and that I have learned to follow, was that a child will not willingly starve - your responsiblity is to provide appropriate food, their responsibility is to eat it! Just make sure that he is getting B12 - not sure what you have in the states - I provide fortified soy milk, and also crush 1/4 of a tablet into juice a couple of times a week.
