Guest guest
Hi there Tanya, my name is Mary and I am raising two Vegan boys myself. I have tried to always make sure that they get there protein from a variety of sources so i will list a few for you. -whole wheat pastas and breads and rice(carbs are good for you contrary to popular belief that they make you fat, they do not) -Mixing flax seed into things is great for fats and proteins. i like to mix it into there oatmeal or cookies i bake or even a spoonfull into sauces and yogurts. it doesn't have much flavor. -there are lots of veggies that have a good amount of protein. for intsance broccolli and peas have high amounts for a vegetable (fresh has more then frozen). -beans are a given. my boys don't like beans much but they will eat tostados and burritos and once again i can mix a little flax seed in with the refried beans. On a side note, nuts and seeds are fantastic for humans. I am kind of suprised that your doctor wont let you introduce atleast nut butters to your 2 year old. my pediatrician was totally okay with me testing them out as early as 12 months. Just a little bit at first to test for allergies obviously. I think alot of doctors are just freaked out by allergies but unless you or your huband have them i wouldn't worry ot horribly much. im not trying to sound anti-doctor but you have to do whats right for you. I would consult a dietetic web site for advice on food before a doctor as there are new studies everyday and it is hard for a family doctor to keep up on food. if you decide to try nuts and seeds out i find that sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and soy nuts have very high amounts of protein per ounce. good luck! Tanya veg head for18 years Posted by: " tanya wynette " wynettelove wynettelove Sat Dec 29, 2007 8:58 pm (PST) Hi my name is Tanya I am 31 years old and I have been a vegetarian for 18 years now. I have 2 children, one is 10 and the other is 2. Both of my children are being raised vegetarians. We eat eggs and dairy we get our eggs from my sister (she has no roosters). Both of my children are raised with the teaching that we do not need to survive by pointlessly killing animals to survive. Our technology and advancement in our knowledge of nutrition has provided us with a fantastic opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle -meat free-. When my daughter was 7 I decided that I had provided her with all of the information that I could and I started to allow her to make her own decisions regrading her meat eating. At 8 she decided to try a peperoni pizza and she loved it. then she wanted to try chicken and she loved it. I was devastated, but I supported her. I did not want to do what my parents did to me when I decided to become a vegetarian and freak out. Luckily my husband and I had a deal from the beginning. He can eat meat and I will not judge as long as I am not expected to buy, touch or cook it. So while my daughter was going through her phase he did all of her cooking. luckily her phase only lasted about three weeks. I find it a struggle to provide my son with enough protein he is only 2 and the Doctor will not allow him to eat nuts yet, and he HATES tofu. The pre-packaged vegi sausages he will eat, however they are filled with sodium and artificial fillers. Maybe someone has some suggestions for me. Well I wanted to introduce myself and say hi. Re: centrifugal juicer - which to buy? Posted by: " Paul Falvo " pfalvo Sat Dec 29, 2007 8:59 pm (PST) After more research, I confess I am more confused than before I started. www.rawfoodadvantage.com claims that a blender is much better than a juicer (and in fact that 3HP is no longer adequate ... 3.5 being the new standard) ... while other websites claim that juicing is far superior to blending because otherwise nutrients are indigestible. I am left thinking it is essential to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and that raw is often better than cooked ... but I am frankly baffled as to whether a juicer or blender -- or neither -- is a good idea. Thoughts? Thanks ... especially to Christine for the original advice on blenders. ~P > As a fellow Canadian, I can suggest trying an Ebay store.
