Guest guest
I will be going along on a school trip later this spring with our son's class- about 1 week long. The itinerary includes several fast food stops- and I get the impression that McDonalds will be a frequent choice. Needless to say I will be packing a lot of sandwiches, snacks, fruit, veggies etc. But there's no way we're sending our son on this adventure without a parent going too! so- Has anyone set foot in a McD's lately? is it possible to get a salad without cheese or meat? aren't the fries still flavored with beef? Will they fix a plain bun with lettuce and tomato upon request? (at this point I don't care if the bun has a smidgen of whey in it, I just want to do my best to mimic the " joyous vegan " persona of Julia Butterfly Hill - for the benefit of our son and all those watchful eyes on that bus - and still have something I can choke down with a smile.) since I can't remember the last time I was in one- and that was probably just for a desperate bathroom trip- Is there anything available that I'm not aware of- like muffins or fruit? Thanks! Danita
Guest guest
I refuse to go to McDonald's. And I won't compromise on that for any reason. Recently a mom in a playgroup suggested we meet up at a local McDonald's so the kids could play on their play equipment. I advised here that my kids have never stepped foot in a McDonald's and I have no intentions of changing that. Not only are the probably the least vegetarian friendly fast food restaurant out there, but I don't ever want my kids equating fun with that place. If you will be there, take her somewhere else. It's a field trip, but usually there are other restaurants around. Explain that there's nothing there to eat and run and get your food from another place nearby (even the Burger King veggie burger). You can always take the food back into McDonald's to be by the group. I've taken food from one restaurant into another, it's no big deal. Guest guest
Is there any way you can suggest going to a Burger King or Wendy's instead? Usually those sorts of places are all in a row anyway. You'd have more choices at either of those two than at a McD's. And yes, the french fries still have the beef flavoring. Good luck, Liz
Guest guest
At McDonalds, they will usually do whatever you request, they also have fruit and walnut salad that you could probably get without the yogurt and they have a garden salad that I am not sure whether it has cheese on it, but I am sure they will take it off. I do believe the fries are fried in beef tallow. For breakfast, I can get our local place to just give me the english muffin and the apple slices but I am not sure if that is the same across the country (I am in Indiana-not exactly veggie friendly). Guest guest
The fries are cooked in vegtable oil, no meat flavoring. We stop on occasion, I get a burger with ketchup, mustard, extra pickle and no meat. They are very accomadating. They also have a apple and walnut salad for $2.00. It does come with a yogart dipping sauce. The walnuts are sugared so there maybe some butter. They also have apple dippers, a package of pre-sliced apples and a side of carmel dip. We stick to these items when we go to McDonald's. We end up there about once every 3 months. Guest guest
I have not been in one, but I just looked on their site for ingredients: *ttp://tinyurl.com/34652 *Looks like there's apple slices - and who knew the apple pie was vegan (not ethical, but - no butter or other hidden milk). English muffins look ok, as does the tortilla - but I don't know what they have on the menu, or if you can sub/omit ingredients. Side salad looks ok, too. there my be more, but those stood out to me when I skimmed it. Depending on where you are going, maybe there is something else nearby you could pick up something from? Not sure if you'd be able to or anything - but www.happycow.com might reveal something nearby or if possible on the way? I'm sure there is much of this in our future, too. Guest guest
Hi, We are a mixed family - 2 vegans and 2 meat eaters. After seeing " Supersize Me " even my 11 yr old meat eater will not eat in McDonalds. I would suggest going to a different place for the whole class. I wouldn't even bring up " vegan " . I would focus on the health issues! I would even talk to other parents to try and get support for a healthier option. If it doesn't work I would eat the sandwiches you brought with you. Maybe even try and see " Supersize Me " before you go then just the thought of McDonalds will turn your stomach and maybe your son's too and he won't want to eat anything there.... Guest guest
The apple/walnut/yogurt breakfast combo is all in one plastic container that is divided up (think tv dinner style) so you only have to uncover which components you want to eat (apples/walnuts) and never have to deal with the yogurt if you don't want. They will give you a bun with veggies on it if you request it. Alot of the salads are pre-made and do have cheese and/or egg in them. You can get a muffin in the morning if you want. Some have the mexican style burritos in the morning as well but you might be able to get one with just veggies in it without the scrambled eggs. You might also luck out and get the McDonald's that is in the gas station/convenience store so they may have some food options and a microwave available! Guest guest
I agree w/ avoiding it. But they now have a salad w/ edamame that you can order w/o the chicken (I think). They were advertising it awhile back and perhaps they still have it, or it might only be in some areas of the country. I haven't tried it. Bringing your own food or going somewhere else and not supporting McDonald's is always a good idea in my opinion! They may be working on becoming more veggie friendly, but the incident w/ the fries having beef flavoring (law suit) shows they definitely didn't care then and would only care if it was lucrative and they are forced to respond to a changing market. If possible, I would try to scope out the areas that you will be in ahead of time. It's good to be prepared. You may be able to offer some advice as to where to stop so that everyone can be accommodated. Also, Taco Bell: 7 layer burrito, no cheese, no sour cream. Del Taco: Veggie Works I think is what theirs is called. Good luck on your trip! Guest guest
Thanks for all the suggestions. When I went to their website it looked like all the veg stuff was only available overseas. I can't really plan for the option of going elsewhere. The busload of kids and assorted chaperones/teachers will be on the road for long stretches and will not likely have time for multiple stops, or for some of the group to go off separately for lunch. Thankfully, dinner time will usually have better choices. If there is a Subway or something more veg friendly right next door then maybe he and I can easily go there. I will suggest Burger King, Wendy’s etc if it has to be a burger joint, -but we may find ourselves where McD’s is the easiest in/out with a bus and convenient to the on/off ramp etc- so it’s nice to know we can supplement our own food if needed. It’s also very possible that other parents will balk at always stopping at the same place. I am not worried about giving them my few dollars. I’m also not worried about my son becoming smitten w/ McD’s – he’s ten years old and had ten years of hearing us bad mouth it and seeing “Supersize me†etc. In fact I’ll probably have to remind him to not say “McDeath†or “Murder King†etc while others are eating. I am doing this so my son will have a great educational experience and also feel like he fits in more with his peers. He is a committed vegan but also very tired of being the only one at his school and getting harassed by some of his classmates etc. I want this to look as seamless as possible, 2 vegans on the road just making a few minor adjustments and keep on truckin’, smiling the whole way with no complaints. It helps that I’m in grad school studying nutrition- so I doubt I’ll get much cross examination from other parents- maybe even find some sympathetic souls. Thanks again for all the help! Guest guest
Danita, I have not been to McDonalds in years but the last time we stopped with my parents I had brought some sandwiches and carrot sticks and ate them with them at a table. I would recommend if you are able to sneak to a Subway or Wendy's. Wendy's side salad has no cheese and you can get a baked potato with chives, I carry some picante or salsa to jazz it up. I know some individuals referenced taco bell but I would steer clear. I was flying home on 1/11 and went through the Dallas airport- I always ask everywhere I go even when I think I know about ingredients. Anyway- they had lard in all of the beans and said that it was a store decision to make the call- I don't trust that everyone might be as educated as the person I talked to so even in a crunch I stay away from Taco bell now.
