Guest guest
Hello list, my 13 year old daughter is a life long vegan and has recently started going to school after having been home educated most of her life. She frequently gets colds now and I suspect that she is is not used to the impact of constantly being with a lot of people and that this is why it is happening. I am trying to ensure her diet is full of fresh fruit and vegetables but could do with more advice as to how to generally boost her immune system. Thanks Jenna UK
Guest guest
Zinc (i keep citrus-flavored ones in the house) is great for colds and sore throats. I give my daughter echineacea (spelled wrong) in the winter - three weeks on and one week off. Mushrooms and miso are supposed to be good for building the immune system. Guest guest
I was going to suggest the same, other than mushrooms and miso. Also, encourage her to wash her hands more, too - especially before having lunch/snacks. Guest guest
Hi, I always use Elderberry syrup at the first sign of a cold. There are several brands out there; the Sambucol (by Nature's Way I believe) is the one that's been tested in labs and shown to be effective. I've used it and the Herbs for Kids brand (it also have Echinacea in it) and like both. The Elderberry has a compound which coats the virus and keeps it from replicating, thus reducing the length of the cold. It also works to keep you from getting a cold if you take it when others around you have a cold. The best thing I can say about it is: My husband (who is sometimes leary of new things) decided he didn't want to take it when I and my first child had come down with a cough and cold. This was right after I found out about it a few years ago. Well, me and my daughter got over the cold (both taking Elderberry syrup) in less than 2 days. DH subsequently came down with it and we sick for a week! He now takes Elderberry at the first sign of a cold! LOL! Guest guest
Have you heard of Apply Cider Vinegar? ACV seemed to work for us. My son had very frequent colds when he was two and that leading to ear infection etc. I read about Apple cider vinegar and tried it for him (as well as for us) and it worked like a magic on him. The recipe we use is, in 1 cup of warm water add 2 spoons of ACV and a shred a bit of ginger and some honey(for taste) i am sure you can use brown sugar in place of honey. mix them all and drink it (try to drink is in one shot as it doesn't taste great) Just make sure that she takes it in full stomach and rinse her mouth with water after taking it, as it is acidic and can upset stomach if taken in empty stomach and also can cause yellowing of teeth in some cases. here is a link on for details. http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/acvinegar.html We gave my son this concoction for about a month (almost daily) and then stopped, and now we give it once in a while(every 3-4 months ) and he is cold free for most of the year and if and when he gets cold, it goes off in a couple of days without any other medication.
