Guest guest
Hello all, I just found out that I am pregnant. I have one 3 old boy already. Anyway, I was a vegetarian before my last pregnancy. During the pregnancy, my body craved meat. I ended up giving in and eating meat during my pregnancy. I stopped after the birth, and we are raising our son veg. I am hoping some of you can help with some high packed protien options, so I do not falter. I am hoping to be more balanced and not have the protien craving so strong this time around. Any advice would be appreciated. By the way, I am not a tofu fan. Guest guest
Have you ever tried Seitan (say-tahn)? If your not allergic to wheat, it's a great protein option. There's something like 23 grams of protein in each serving. I make my own out of vital wheat gluten, but you can buy it packaged at the Health Food Store. Guest guest
Quinoa is excellent. Full of protein and can be eaten as a substitute for rice, etc.
Guest guest
There are also high-protein add-ins like miso and spirulina that you can throw into whatever else you're eating. I made a " savory bagel spread " from Vegan Planet (by Robin Robertson) this weekend with three high-protein ingredients, and my whole family is enjoying it. Here's the recipe: 1/3 cup tahini 1/4 cup miso 4 oz silken tofu (anywhere from soft to firm, depending on the texture of spread you like, but make sure it's silken) 1 tbsp lemon juice Throw it all in your blender and blend until smooth. It's fantastic on a toasted whole-grain bagel with lettuce and tomato. It would also be good on crackers, or if you used soft tofu and maybe a bit more lemon juice could probably be used as a dip. One caution, miso is very high in sodium and a little generally goes a long way. Heather Kay S wrote: > > Quinoa is excellent. Guest guest
If you have not already done so, switching from white to whole grain (tortillas, rice, pasta) will increase the amount of protein (and fiber). Congratulations on your new family member! Kay S <pwllbudr wrote: Quinoa is excellent. Guest guest
We do the whole grain for exactly that reason. Thanks robin koloms <rkoloms wrote: If you have not already done so, switching from white to whole grain (tortillas, rice, pasta) will increase the amount of protein (and fiber). Guest guest
I " beefed " up my protein intake by adding a vegan soy? protein powder to a smoothie.? It added 25 g of protein daily.? Could make that even more depending upon what you add to your smoothy (I just did 1/2 banana, blueberries, & OJ).? The brand I bought that didn't taste too bad (if hidden in a smoothie) is by Nature's Life called " Super Green Pro 96 " so it also has lots of good greens (phytonutrients, like spirulina & ?barley grass.? This is also cholesterol & sugar free.? I purchased it from my local co-op.? It comes bulk or pre-packaged.? I did bulk as I never knew with the morning sickness what I would grow a distaste for from day to day.? I managed to slug this down well into my babie's first year of life. Good luck. stacey Mary <jmkable Sun, 3 Feb 2008 6:11 pm Looking for protien options... Hello all, I just found out that I am pregnant. I have one 3 old boy already.
