Homeopathy is not vegan

Hi Lorraine & all,

Just so you know all homeopathic medications are NOT

vegan, as they are made with a lactose-sugar base for

the pellets. You can ask your practitioner to make up

a solution for drop-dosing, which dilutes it down a

lot, but it still has to be made from some " mother "

pellets. I'm a naturopath that does a lot of

homeopathy, but I always let my vegan patients know

that there is some milk sugar (a tiny, tiny bit used

for a short time) in the medication. Homeopathy can

work miracles in so many ways, so it's a trade off

that only you can decide on.

Good luck and welcome to this great group!

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for the welcome to the group! I did know that homeopathic tabs

are lactose-based. That's okay with me since we're lacto-ovo's anyway

and eat dairy. My issue was with things like Apis Mel, which is made of

honey bees; Sepia, made of cuttlefish ink; Cantharis, made of beatles

(not John, Paul, George and Ringo, but the bugs - haha); Spongia Tosta,

made of sea sponges; Oscillococcinum, made of ducks; etc. Someone told

me long ago that homeopathy is herbal, and totally uncharacteristically,

I never researched it further. I have a pile of homeopathy I'm passing

on to a non-vegetarian friend now. Dang it. Do you happen to know

where I can find a list of vegetarian (lacto-ovo okay) homeopathy

sources? Or even non-vegetarian, so I can know what to look out for?

Thanks much, in advance, if so!

Have a great day,

Lorraine

Melissa,

Thanks for the education. I had found this out when my family started

trying more homeopathic options to get away from traditional medicine. How

can I easily determine what items contain more than milk sugar? For example

I found one remedy that is made from Duck liver and heart -yuck! While our

family eats vegan, we have decided that homeopathic is a much better option

than traditional medicines that may be tested on animals let alone contain

animal products, however I am more comfortable leaning towards those

remedies that are plant versus animal based- milk sugar I can handle, animal

parts I cannot.. Is there any easy to identify way to tell the derivatives

in these products?

The product I was talking about specifically was Oscillococcinum by Boiron

The active ingredient is Anas Barbariae Hepatis et Cordis Extractum (extract

of Muscovy Duck liver and heart)

I wish I had realized this the first time before I took it.

Thanks,

Lorraine,

I am in the same boat. I had made an assumption and ended up taking

Oscillococcinum. Trying to find a friendly list of non animal derived

homeopathics so I can stick to those.

Hi Paige,

Yeah, I took Oscillo for years, and others that I mentioned - in the

beginning, because a trusted health care practitioner said it was all

herbal, and then I just never researched it further. Not very wise of

me. I do have a couple homeopathy books that are helping a bit to

identify these things, but what I mostly do now if I'm looking into

getting a certain homeopathic remedy, is run the ingredients I'm not

sure about through a Google search, and usually in a couple links can

find out the source - it's always a relief when I first see a big

picture of a flower, then scroll down to the name of the homeopathic

source I'm researching! :-) But, this all means researching the

homeopathic treatment that matches the problem, then researching online

the ingredients/sources, and then starting over again if that doesn't

work. I've heard there is a wonderful book that lists most homeopathic

remedies, with accompanying pictures of the sources - but I haven't put

out the $90-some since the internet is still working for me for now -

and I don't recall the name of the book, but can find out if you're

interested.

I'll be sure to post any info I learn about a list of vegetarian

homeopathy sources - and anyone else, please do the same if you come

across one! Thanks!!!

Have a great evening,

Lorraine
