Guest guest
Hi all, I am new to the group. I am looking for different ideas for feeding my 18 month old son. I seem to be stuck on dairy products and faux meat for protein for him... Any ideas would be great!!! Guest guest
Hi, Denise, I'm not too fancy, either, when it comes to feeding my 4-year-old or 18-month-old, but I do like to serve a lot of beans and tofu. Most recently, I'm putting silken tofu in home made mac and cheese and, the other day, potato soup. I feel like I should be doing more, too. Other ideas? Guest guest
My son loved to eat kidney beans (and others) just plain around that age. He also loved plain tofu, just cubed (or in fancy shapes since I had teeny cookie cutters that are about bite-sized). Also, frozen peas and corn (yeah, not heated up, just out of the bag LOL). he also liked steamed broccoli 'trees' (I think I still cut them down smaller for him), carrots (though now I don't recall if he liked them raw or not at that age). Generally he loved (and still does) about all veggies. Any/all fruits (mango and pineapple are his favorites still) Cooked lentils and rice (or beans and rice), pretty much anything we had for meals, he had, too. I may have spiced it less for him, but not too much so he'd get used to how we made stuff. missie On Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 2:03 PM, Denise <jayroe wrote: > Hi all, > > I am new to the group. > I am looking for different ideas for feeding my 18 month old son. > I seem to be stuck on dairy products and faux meat for protein for him... > Any ideas would be great!!! > > Denise > > ________ > Be a better friend, newshound, and > know-it-all with Mobile. Guest guest
thanks Trish, I will try the tofu idea and more beans... any other ideas on other stuff you feed your kids? I am trying to give him more finger foods, sometimes all he does though is throw everything every place, which the dogs loves of coarse! Guest guest
Your four year old should be eating what the rest of the family eats, and your 18 month old should be pretty close. Guest guest
Yeah, we all eat the same thing. ALL of us could use more variety, I guess! But if I can get my carnivore husband to love my mac and cheese, lasagna, and potato soup -- all containing tofu -- I'm on the right track! I just worry about the kids' protein more than ours, but I'm sure we're all doing just fine. robin koloms <rkoloms wrote: Your four year old should be eating what the rest of the family eats, and your 18 month old should be pretty close. Guest guest
Hi Denise, We used to get organic, no-salt-added canned beans and lentils for our son's protein at that point - he ate 10 or 12 kinds of beans at that age. We also used cubed tofu and sliced boiled eggs or scrambled eggs, oh and sesame and sunflower seeds - those are a mess, but he really liked the texture and being able to stick them to his sticky hands. :-) And I think around 2 years, we started nut butters and nuts. Good luck! Lorraine On Behalf Of Denise Monday, February 25, 2008 12:03 PM help feeding 18 month old Hi all, I am new to the group. I am looking for different ideas for feeding my 18 month old son. Guest guest
Denise, If you have not read Super Baby Food I would highly recommend it. It has a great porridge and lots of ideas for foods that are veg and vegan friendly. http://www.superbabyfood.com/ I used this fairly consistently until my son was 4. Guest guest
We've had good luck with hummus, any type of cooked bean (including spreading on tortilla), lentils and lots of various other fruits and veggies. Does he like cereals? Ours likes a Cheerios equivalent that we get from our co-op. We have no allergies in our family and have also given him almond butter with good success. On bread that amounts to a fair bit of protein. For snacks, he absolutely loves Veggie Booty, one of the most junk type things we let him have, but it does have some protein plus iron, calcium and other vitamins. What we're struggling most with now is making sure he gets variety, as our family tends to naturally settle into having the same foods over and over for a few weeks before moving on to something else. It's an issue with breakfast and lunch more than dinner. Not to go too far off topic, our babe is younger but we've been following baby-led weaning with him since 6 months and he eats all sorts. (It's a method of introducing solids, not weaning in the sense most people know, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby-led_weaning.) I consider this one of the best decisions we've made for him so far. If anyone is looking to start feeding solids to their infant, I encourage you to consider it. Guest guest
Welcome.? I joined the group for the same reason when my now 18 M old son ws 15 M old.? I received a lot of very helpful suggestions that have been wonderful for keeping my son happy, healthy, growing, & enjoying food. Lots of recommendations for Avacados (my son just won't eat them, no matter how many times & ways I tried them), peas (he still won't touch those either), waffles, pancakes, & many other items that were more specific to our vegan diet.? The greatest advice they've given is not to give up trying, sometimes it takes 10 or more tries with a food & all of the sudden it is his favorite (for a week or so), & even retry a food in a while that he didn't like last month. Today I added coconut milk to my son's brown rice & he gobbled like he rarely every does.? That was a HUGE success.? He also loves whole wheat pasta (the funner shapes, the better) & I sneak olive or flaxseed oil on to add fat. Good luck, I'll let the more experienced & helpful gals give the advice now. Guest guest
My daughter is 21 months and is big on " dip " . I just made a great Garlicky White Bean dip with cannelini beans, olive oil, lemon juice, and some basil. Blended in the food processor, and topped with diced roasted red peppers or diced tom. Or, veggie burgers sliced in strips to dip into ketchup. Lastly, I put kidney beans in my spag with tom sauce. She seems to pick out all the beans first I hope this helps. I will try to think of others.... insanepup wrote: Welcome.? I joined the group for the same reason when my now 18 M old son ws 15 M old.?
