Guest guest
Unfortunately, true knowledge comes only from understanding all aspects of the inherently cruel practices and outcomes of factory farming, and the dozens of videos that I could recommend show at least some evidence of cruelty to help people overcome their denial of the atrocities. Animal agriculture is bad for the environment, it aggravates global hunger, it brutalizes animals and compromises our health. The number one source of methane worldwide is animal agriculture. Methane is responsible for nearly as much global warming as all other non-CO2 greenhouse gases put together. It's going to be as challenging to find videos for children that can adequately address these issues as it is easy for the food industry to position the feces-contaminated rotting flesh of a tortured cow as " tasty treat " . But good luck! You can try two online cartoon versions that get much of the message across without the graphic evidence: http://www.themeatrix1.com/ http://www.markfiore.com/doreen_downer_0 , sahmomof8 wrote: > > Does anyone know of any good videos for kids (no terrifying factory farming > scenes, please!) dealing with " why be vegetarian " ? Guest guest
A Sacred Duty is beautifully done vegetarian vidoe from a Jewish perspective. It has some slightly disturbing footage towards the end; I suggest that you watch it first to see if it is ok for your kids. I was fine with my 12 year old watching it, but it is not for all. sahmomof8 wrote: Does anyone know of any good videos for kids (no terrifying factory farming scenes, please!) dealing with " why be vegetarian " ? Guest guest
Didn't mean to imply that I wanted to hide the facts from my kids. I definitely don't! I myself find it just about impossible to see the torture and suffering the animals go through, so I was hoping to find a completely factual, yet more gently done video/DVD. Just like as if I were explaining the Holocaust to my kids--I'd show them documentaries with some photos of starving survivors at liberation, or something like that. I'd show the survivors telling their stories. But I would NOT approve of my boys seeing actual " medical experiments " the " doctors " performed on the poor concentration camp inmates! There is a difference between informing and traumatizing. I just want to be sure whatever I show my kids doesn't cross the line. Marilyn **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Guest guest
Thank you to the person (Mark Langley) that posted the link to the MEATRIX website. My 8 and 10 year old sons loved it. I do not believe in hiding the truth from kids for fear of overwhelming them. My sons have viewed our graphic PETA videos before and they know the truth about what really goes on at processing plants. There is no way you can terrify your children more than the poor animals that are going to the slaughterhouse are terrified. We must teach our children at an early age to stand up for the rights of others, human or not. Guest guest
there's kinda a lack of information out for young children. i've actually gone through the joys of trying to find things suitable for my son (age five going on fifteen) to watch and there really isn't anything. i didn't find the Meatrix video i watched to be objectionable at all, i actually thought it was a little obnoxious (personal opinion - but then again, i can't watch any of the matrix movies for the same reason). i am unfamiliar with the book you mentioned, but i'll look into it. i have a book that peta put together called *50 Awesome Ways Kids Can Help Animals*. it's really informational, so most of it bores Alex to tears. but i can read it to him (parts of it) and he seems to relate. he relates more to animal friendliness than to not eating meat. the only other videos i can think of aren't specifically vegetarian/vegan, but they impart the " don't eat animals " vibe. Babe is one, Chicken Run, i'm sure there are others but they won't come to me at the moment. you said your five-year-old is sensitive so you'll probably want to avoid Chicken Run. there are episodes of the cartoon " Teen Titans " that i particularly love (my son will tell everyone who'll listen that Beast Boy eats tofu) because they manage to get little comments in that you don't think the kids notice, but they do.
