Guest guest
I have found two brands of hemp milk in my local Whole Foods. I can't remember the nutrient content, but one is MUCH higher in sugar than the other--can't remember which. If that makes a difference to you, be sure to read the labels! Hemp milk is sweeter than most other alternative milks, and thicker. Great for smoothies, frozen pops, and desserts. This month's Vegetarian Journal has a nutritional guide to alternative milks, FYI. Guest guest
I just give DS a sippy cup full of the milk and he drinks it straight. He'll drink about 10 oz in one sitting - I don't like the flavor that much so right now he is the only one drinking it. You can buy Hemp milk at some natural food stores - I like the Living Hravest brand - it is fortified with B12, and D2 and is a vegan product. But the store where I buy it was out a few weeks ago, so I had to make my own. Hemp Milk 1/4 cup shelled hempseeds 1 cup water 1 tsp Agave Nectar (or more depending on your taste) You may want to add vanilla, or maple syrup if you need to get your child used to the flavor, but I didn't need to do this with DS and he doesn't like it at all if it is too sweet. Directions: Place seeds into a blender and add half the water. Blend at multiple speeds (I start on a medium speed, then move to high speed.) When it is the consistency of thick, hemp cream, add the remaining water, and agave nectar and blend once more. This is now a concentrated version of the milk - add water to the consistency you like when you serve it. You can easily use the thicker version as a base for smoothies - just add a frozen banana and some other fruits. I have never tried it on cereal - or given it to him on cereal either, but I don't see why not. Guest guest
The one I buy has 15 g of " Sugars " but those are from the hemp naturally and they use rice syrup to sweeten it too. The Rice Milk I buy also has 15 g of sugars and no added sweetener. DH is diabetic, so we use either Rice Syrup or Agave in our house since they are both safe sweeteners for diabetics - all sugars are not created equal Susan On 3/27/08, sahmomof8 <sahmomof8 wrote: > > I have found two brands of hemp milk in my local Whole Foods. Guest guest
Susan--Thanks for clarifying about the sugars! To be honest, I was not as careful about checking the KIND of sugar, which I usually do. I just saw " 15 grams " and ran screaming. But it does make a difference. Thanks!
