My son is going away to college in the fall to the San Francisco

area...so we are planning a " road trip " in a couple of weeks. He's been

a vegetarian for about a year and is interested in finding some good

(and inexpensive) places to eat there! He's going to be a bit homesick

as it is, so I'd like to be able to show him a couple of suggested hang-

outs! Any suggestions?? Thanks!

SOOO jealous! San Fran has to be the mecca of veg*ns. I spent about a

month out there a few years back for work and everywhere I went, the menus

were so vegan friendly. My favorite everyday food place is Herbivore (

http://www.herbivorerestaurant.com). They may be a little expensive for a

college budget. You can also check www.happycow.net for great restaurant

recomendations - they rate restaurants with 1 to 4 carrots based on price.

I always use this site when I am going to an area including something local.

While you are there though, you should try Milennium

http://www.millenniumrestaurant.com/ in the Union Square District. It is

the only vegan fine dining restaraunt in the US and it is wonderful. I took

a very meat & potatoes co-worker with me there - she had nut encrusted

tempeh and loved it - she also had mashed potatoes that had cauliflower in

them and she claimed to hate cauliflower, but loved their mashed

" potatoes. " Make a reservation if you go - we had to wait for a seat at the

bar because we didn't know to make a reservation.

Enjoy your trip, and seeing your son off to college. It will be much harder

on you than it is on him.

I live in the SF Bay area and can attest that Herbivore and

Millennium are excellent choices. Chinatown has a little hole in the

wall restaurant called Lucky Creation. They are fairly inexpensive

and carry vegetarian pork buns for about 60 cents. I usually stock

up on them because they freeze well. Yum Yum House has a meat menu

but can make pretty much any dish vegetarian. The

sunflower " chicken " is delicious. Cha-Ya is vegetarian/vegan

Japanese, located on Valencia. Greens in Fort Mason is a little

pricier but they do have a to go section as well. Haight/Ashbury has

a lot of vegetarian friendly restaurants/cafes. Across the bridge

(Berkeley), your son will find a ton or places to eat around

Telegraph Ave. Pretty much anywhere you go (even a steak house) in

this area will provide a vegetarian option!

Have fun,
