Guest guest
Hello everyone! My son and I are going to be spending 3 weeks with my mom and grandma, in Florida. We'll be in the Tampa area, and while I used to live there...that was um about 10 years ago and sans kiddo (If you count just moving from the state, I've not actually lived in the Tampa area for much longer than that maybe not since 1992 when I went to G'ville to go to college and then left the state in 1997). I'm excited to get out of the cold, and we do have some things already planned. My mom is actually across the Bay from Tampa, she's around Palm Harbor/Tarpon Springs. Besides the awesome Pinellas trail and the beaches and parks such, I was wondering what other types of things there are now to do with our son that are in the area and fairly inexpensive. I have an arboretum membership and I know that there is a Children's Museum in St. Pete that we've gone to (I think it's part of Sunken Gardens maybe that we've gone to - and is very near EVO's which we found before we went last time we visited). But that's not something we'd probably do more than once a week (my mom works down that way, so it's not out of the way). I'm not worried about places to eat, as I'm bringing a couple cookbooks, and I know about happycow.com. I was just looking for some indoor things, in case the weather gets too hot for us. Around here, we have an indoor playground and something called Monkey Island (there's a HUGE climbing thing, and tons of those bouncy castle type things). Just wondering what else is around. We plan on brining our scooters (they pack flat into the suitcases LOL) and that will probably be the easiest thing for us to do. If anyone is in the area, what do you tend to do with your children other than the park/beach? Just wondering. I like to have a few things to do so *I* don't get tired of going to the same kind of places. Thanks in advance for any help you can give! Guest guest
How old is your son? There is a GREAT indoor playroom in Seminole, off of Seminole and Walsingham Rd. It is called Mommy's Cozy Corner. They are on the web if you want to check it out. There is also Planet Jump (not sure where it is lovated) and Ultimate Party and Play Zone (on 62nd Ave.) I am in a StPeteWorkingMoms and there are play groups that I can invite you to, if you like. Most of the children are ages 0-6. Saturday mornings there is the Market in Downtown St. Pete on Central Ave b/w 1st and 2nd St. They have live entertainment and lots of food and craft tents available. A yummy suggestion is some soup from Foodies and a smoothy from the man with the eye-patch. Also, some of the breads are to die for, and they have a huge tent with locally grown organic fruits and veggies. That is where I get much of my shopping done for the week And, like you said, Sunken Gardens and Great Explorations. Also, on that side of town and farther north is Weedon Island. They have some daytime programs for pre-k aged children and a beautiful preserve. Have you been to Ft. DeSoto? It is on the southrenmost tip of the peninsula, but worth the drive. They have a Ft for the kids to play on, bikes to rent, pavillions for picnics, etc... And, depending on the age of your child, on the way to Ft. DeSoto is Tampa BayWatch. They do many water rescue activities throughout the surrounding counties. Busch Gardens and Adventure Island in Tampa are fun to do, and the Clearwater Aquarium is very cool. The public libraries all have story time and art activities on alternating days www.stpetelibraries.org I have had a hard time eating out, and I still eat limited cheeses, but a good regular rest. with a great location is Frenchy's on Clearwater Beach. There are 3 or 4 of the chain, but the one actually ON the beach is great, and fruit is a side item plus they have a good portobella sandwich. Plus, while you wait for a table, the kids can play on the beach or you can go to the beach and do Frenchy's for lunch... Other than that, not quite sure about places that only serve vegetarian food. If you are in downtown for dinner, go to Ceviche. It is totally amazing, a tapas rest. and they have multiple veggie options. A little dressy, but reasonable. Make sure to get there early. I am a Gator grad as well. BA '03 and M.Ed. '04. Welcome back to the Sunshine State. Have a safe trip, and enjoy yourself. Let me know when you get here and I will see what playgroups are happening. Guest guest
Hi Missie, We lived in Tampa about 18 years ago - my inlaws lived in Clearwater, and my brother-in-law now lives in Holiday. We've visited many times since we moved back to the other coast, and our favorite thing to do in the area is the Salvador Dali museum. I don't know how old your son is, or whether an art museum would be his cup o' chamomile, but the museum is unique and tells Dali's life story via the paintings. But, we haven't been back for about 5 years, so I'm sure folks who live there or have been more recently, can give you better kids' activities tips. Have a fun trip!! Guest guest
Cassie, My son will be 5 in June. These all sound great, though I'm not sure how far they are from my mom (distances have gotten longer since I used to live there and drive there all the time LOL)! Thank you so much! Maybe a play group might be good, is it on a weekend though? I know when we're there our weekends are going to be pretty much booked, since my mom doesn't work (well, she works alternate weekends I think). I'll definitely let you know when we get there! IT would be great to meet up with some other kids about his age while we're there if we can. Thanks again! Guest guest
We used to live on that side of the bay but now have moved to the Brandon area on the other side of the bay. There is a mom who put together a website http://www.tampawithkids.com/ that is pretty useful with things to do, places to go, etc. This is really such a family friendly area that you can also find lots of free stuff to do as well. Every Thursday, I go to this site http://www2.tbo.com/ static/sections/tbo-entertainment/ We usually find too many things to do in one weekend If you are over in Tampa - there is a great indoor play center called Kidz Club (http://www.kidz-clubonline.com/) - depending on how old your son is, that might be fun. Also, depending on his age, there are craft times and projects at Michael's and Joann's stores - the stores over here only do that on the weekends. Our Home Depot even started doing kid activities on the weekends. I know you said you were not worried about what to eat, but while you are in Palm Harbor, try Consciousness Blossoms - it is right of Tampa Road at the corner of Lake St. George. Lots of great veggie options, juices, etc. There is also a fairly large natural food store in that area called Palm Harbor Natural Foods. If you get a chance, I think Tampa's biggest kept secret is Grass Root (http:// www.thegrassrootlife.com/) - it is a vegan, raw food restaurant. Not everything is raw, but everything is vegan. They are very kid friendly and have wonderful food - try the key lime cheesecake if they have it - YUMM! It is on the corner of Florida Ave and Columbus. Guest guest
I don't live there now but I was born/raised in St. Pete. Three places I would recommend: Boyd Hill Nature Trail (a nice secluded walk around a variety of ecosystems), The Salvador Dali Museum (my 8 and 6 year old were fascinated by it), and walking in and around the areas of The Peer. Also Sunken Gardens and the Children's Museum (but you already got those). Also if you have never tried Zumba try dropping in on one of the classes in the area (it's a Latin dance type workout), but that's more of a mommy thing. I highly recommend Sylvia from the Gold's Gym on 38th ave in St. Pete. Have fun! Guest guest
Lorraine, Yeah, we used to go to the Dali Museum a lot when we were waiting for 'shows' at Jannus Landing when I was a teen in the area (mid-late 80's heh). I'm not sure he'd be up for it, he'd probably run through and be done before we ever were, especially after the car ride over there, but I think I may see what else is in the area, and maybe also Ybor City - I know it's changed quite a lot since I was last there, too. LOL. My mom is maybe 10 minutes or so from Holiday. We go and visit my mom maybe once a year (last time we were there was this past December for Christmas, and only for a week). This is the first 'extended' visit we're having with them, so we're really excited, and also because it's the first Mother's Day we've had together in quite a long time (I don't even know when the last time we spent one together was - maybe when my son was born almost 5 years ago LOL). I also just found the Moccasin Lake Nature Park (I nearly got an internship there when I was at the Junior College taking classes before I moved to G'ville). Hee. I know he'll like that - plenty of outside trails to run around, and also rescued birds of prey. Can't go wrong with that. Thanks, and I appreciate all the suggestions that are coming! Guest guest
Those are great links - pretty much what I was looking for - general type stuff! I found this earlier, too: http://www.clearwaterflorida.org/visitor/things_do.asp and some parenting link for stuff going on in the area - but I think the one you posted is much better. (The one I found was for specifically camps and such, but I didn't need those). LOL We always make a trip to the Palm Harbor Natural Foods when we're there for a few 'supplies'. My mom is actually not far from Consciousness Blossoms.I wanted to stop there last time we were there, but my husband thought it sounded too flakey, so we never went. LOL. I mentioned it to my mom, but she wasnt' up for checking it out another time, but maybe I'll try it with my son since we'll be there more or less on our own a few days a week (my mom has to work for some of them and my grandma has a couple of classes she does during the week and is gone most of the morning a few days a week). I think maybe in that area, I don't know which shopping center it was, but there was a Chinese restaurant we stopped at and were excited when they had some tofu dishes on the menu (I think it said bean curd in the description) and we ordered them and they asked us about 5 times 'you know that that is tofu, right? You still want it?' It was very strange, but we eagerly said YES! heh. It was really good, and we got a ton, so maybe we scored from ordering something 'wacky' LOL. Oh - does anyone know if the Pinellas Trail in that area has something of a bike rental? I can never seem to find anything when we go, and it's terribly expensive to fly the bikes down with us. I'm happy to bring our helmets if we can rent something in the area (Tarpon/Palm harbor/ Clearwater/Dunedin). Mostly for my husband and I, as I know we looked for some things, but only really found bikes for sale (very cheap ones, and nothing for our kiddo - and he's able to ride a 2 wheel bike now, too, but I don't expect they would rent bikes his size). Thanks, these are great too! Guest guest
Oh, I should tell my mom about Zumba - she LOVES to dance and has been in some kind of dance troop down there - I know she was in the Gasparilla parade a few years ago I think it was with them. I don't think she's still in it, but she still goes out dancing and loves Latin Dance! Sadly, I have 3 left feet when it comes to dancing. Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Missie, I've heard what you alluded to about Ybor City - that it's changed a bit (or more) in the years since we lived in the area. Or maybe it's that we've changed - and my brother-in-law providing this info is old like me and less " down " with whatever happens like we were years ago. :-) I'm sure you could get an idea from locals. Have fun! And be sure to stop by a drive-through-market! Man, I miss those!!!! Lorraine On Behalf Of Missie Ward Monday, April 14, 2008 6:32 PM Re: Florida -Suggestions Lorraine, Yeah, we used to go to the Dali Museum a lot when we were waiting for 'shows' at Jannus Landing when I was a teen in the area (mid-late 80's heh). Guest guest
Yeah, I have no idea. I think I'm just nostalgic for the 'old days' before it became more 'yuppified'. LOL. The local cool stuff I liked all got turned into starbucks (I occasionally think about Three Birds) and other stuff turned into trendy restaurants and whatnot. I'm really not sure what I expect to be there now, and it hasn't been what it was when I went there in a very long time. I was guessing if the trend was continuing they'd have some kid-friendly stuff there now (no idea), it would be interesting to see how things changed. But it would be a bit far to go exploring with the kiddo, and I'm not even sure I would know my way around anymore - seriously. Guest guest
Many of our activities are in the evenings or weekends, as we are working moms There are many kids, especially boys, in that age range, so he would fit right in. I know when we're there our weekends are going to be pretty much booked, since my mom doesn't work (well, she works alternate weekends I think). I'll definitely let you know when we get there! IT would be great to meet up with some other kids about his age while we're there if we can. Thanks again! Guest guest
Hi Missie, I know what you mean! We visited Tampa a few years ago, and thought we'd drive up Dale Mabry to see what our old neighborhood looks like now - we couldn't even find it at first! It's like a series of Starbucks and strip malls now . . . I mean, yeah, we had plenty of wireless hotspots to check e-mail, but couldn't find the old landmarks we used years ago, since they were all selling low-fat, carmel macchiatos now. :-) Pretty funny. We left feeling the same way - this isn't our neighborhood. But, I guess the alternate feeling is when we visited my partner's home town neighborhood in North Miami, and not one thing had changed since he was a kid . . . literally, he even made jokes that some of the neighbors still had the same cars. :-) Oh, I take that back - one thing changed - the people who bought his childhood home took out the lantern on a post in the front yard . . . that's about it. :-) And I agree - the expansion of the 19 nearly caused me a heart attack! I was sure we were in the wrong place, took a wrong turn, were totally lost. Ah, our little Tampa has grown up. Have a great trip!
