Guest guest
My kids dr is INSANE. I just do not like him for many reasons, but telling me my kids are Too skinny because they are not in the 'new baby hgt/wgt scale'. I am tall, but thin as are all my children and hubby. I guess that does not matter. I nursed and being vegan, was tested all the time for my iron level.. awww they must have felt dumb! Now they want to do that to my daughter, and tell me she is such a petite thing, maybe she should have just a 'little milk/eggs/meat' to get some weight on her. Yeah ok, blame the fast food places for childhood obesity.. I'm thinking it is my DR!!! So in regards to getting calcium, it isnt that great but tropicana pure premium has the vitamin d and calcium with no pulp. Good for kiddos under one. For bean, so far so good but my daughter is only 15 mths and not yet able to assert her 'no eww' in regards to food choices. I also get hummus, or just use the magic bullet thingy my mom gave me and mash up beans of all sorts to make a little wrap for her and I. It is also nice to mash the beans up and use in some wheat pasta. I still REALLY would love to find a dietician who would actually help me with my daughter diet, and not tell me i HAVE to feed her dairy and meat. Dayle Dayle C. Guest guest
Hi Dayle, Don't give up - you can find a really great doctor - it might be hard, you might have to drive a bit, or wait for an appointment, but it'll be totally worth it. We have a family doc who is amazing! My partner/husband worries often that our son is thin - forgetting that he and I were both super thin as kids, too, and I am still relatively thin. Our doc just tells him that it's not about charts or competing with other kids, but about looking at family trends and muscle tone, and his exemplary vegetarian diet! Yep, an MD who praises us for his good diet. She's not a vegetarian, but says that our family is healthier she is - due to our diet. Nice! We always leave her office hearing " you guys are doing a great job, keep it up! " We all love going to see her. Keep looking - you'll find someone great. Oh, and she's not covered by our insurance, but we happily pay out of pocket for the very few appointments we have. We'd also happily drive a couple states away and wait in a waiting room all day to see her as opposed to some of the other nightmare docs we've heard of in our area. Good luck! Guest guest
Medical doctors are trained to be overconfident and most feel obliged to dispense nutritional guidance, although they generally have virtually no formal training in nutrition. The growth charts that your doctor referred to, as you likely know already, are from the CDC: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/about/major/nhanes/growthcharts/clinical_charts.\ htm Both the absolute level and changes over time should be monitored. But as you appreciate, efforts to get a child up the curve faster by eating animal products set them up for chronic disease later in life. Your doctor could benefit from reading Dr. Fuhrman's book, " Disease-Proof your Child " , Dr. Harris' book, " The Scientific Basis of Vegetarianism " , or you could just point him to Dr. Fuhrman's website (http://www.drfuhrman.com/children/default.aspx), where we have this (emphasis added to the most relevant comment): " We have been indoctrinated since early childhood to believe that animal protein is a nutrient to be held in high esteem. We have been brought up with the idea that these foods are good for us if they help us grow bigger and faster. Nothing could be farther from the truth. " " The public, as well as the media, is confused about this issue. They continue to associate the term better nutrition with earlier maturity and larger stature resulting from our greater consumption of animal protein and animal fats. These unfavorable trends are repeatedly reported as positive events. For example, earlier writers and nutritionists have mistakenly equated rapid growth with health. Science has demonstrated that an increased rate of growth is not a good thing. The slower a child grows, the slower he or she ages. Slower growth, taking longer to reach maturity, is predictive of a longer life in animal studies. We are finding the same thing in humans: an unnaturally rapid growth and premature puberty are risk factors for cancers and other diseases later in life. Evidence continues to mount that these same factors leading to early maturity and excessive growth in childhood increase the occurrence of cancer in general, not just breast and prostate cancer. Excluding malnutrition or serious disease, the slower we grow and mature, the longer we live. " Do your doctor and his patients a favor and direct him to Dr. Fuhrman's site and book. Then do your family a favor and get another doctor.
Guest guest
Medicine is a consumer good. If your car mechanic told you that you needed a repair that didn't make sense, you would find a new mechanic. Why stay with this doctor? You clearly are not getting lifestyle support. Are you able to get preservative free vaccines? keepuspurring wrote: My kids dr is INSANE. Guest guest
Dayle--I see two options here for you. One--I'd look around for a more supportive and knowledgeable doctor. Yours doesn't have the knowledge or understanding to be of any help to you as you raise your children without meat. The other option is to not ask him ANY questions about nutrition, and calmly educate him whenever the topic comes up, making it easier for the next veggie parent who comes into his office. Being skinny, with or without a family history of thin parents, is NOT a signal to add meat or dairy to the diet. FWIW, I am short and heavy, my husband is average size. Our firstborn is VERY thin. Always has been. He is omnivorous. Our other two together (who are also omnivorous) are of average size. I have no idea why the oldest is so thin. His pediatrician used to comment, but never to the point of being annoying, or wanting to test him for anything. Doctors usually know next to nothing about nutrition, let alone " alternative " nutrition. That's just the way it is. Continue feeding your child a healthy, meat free diet, knowing that YOU know best. Marilyn
Guest guest
Dayle, There are many vegan and vegan-friendly Registered Dietitians (RDs) out there -- I'm one of them! (I phone counsel vegans regularly, especially those with food allergies or who are pregnant... but I don't have a regular counseling practice). You can find a list of additional vegan or vegan-friendly RDs here: http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/nutcounsel Good luck. Best, Dina Aronson ----- RE: .......
