Hello,

Regarding:

" You usually see a dietician to try to help treat diseases with food

rather than medicine. My husband saw one once for diabetes

management and she wasn't that helpful. She gave him a meal plan

that was close to atkins - very high in animal protein and low carb

veggies. I bought him Defeating Diabetes by Brenda Davis which was

much more helpful and he is now off all his medicine (something he

couldn't do using the dietician meal plan). I wish I had found a

vegan friendly dietician for him because they can be helpful. "

And:

" I reccommend speaking to a Nutritionist rather than a dietitian.

Becky "

Brenda Davis, author of Defeating Diabetes IS a registered dietitian (not to

mention one of the most wonderful people in the world). She also wrote

Becoming Vegan and Becoming Vegetarian and others. And yes, Defeating

Diabetes is a vegan book. She devotes her life to helping people become

healthy through plant-based diets. And as a vegan dietitian and author

myself, I agree, it is true, that many dietitians are NOT knowledgeable

about or supportive of the vegan diet. (They make the rest of us look bad.)

Same goes for many nutritionists. (Buyer Beware: Anyone can call themselves

a " nutritionist " so make sure that no matter who you consult with, that

person has formal education. A Certified Nutritionist is an appropriate

choice.)

Dietitians do all sorts of things, but we all seek to promote healthful

eating. I, and many other dietitians, support a vegan diet, unfortunately,

others don't, but that's for a different listserv... :-)

The VRG has awesome registered dietitians on staff, Reed Mangels, RD, PhD,

Nancy Berkoff, RD, EdD, CCE, and Suzanne Havala Hobbs, DrPH, RD (you might

receive Vegetarian Journal, so you know about these women) and they are

extremely knowledgeable about vegan nutrition, and have collectively helped

millions of people become healthy, successful vegans and vegetarians.

Best,

Dina
